Fareed's Take: Netanyahu doesn't want a deal

We've just gone through an arcane debate about whether Barack Obama said anything new when he called for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement based on 1967 borders with mutually agreed upon land swaps. In fact, that has been the working assumption of all negotiating parties - America, Israel and the Palestinian Authority - for over 20 years. It is what the Camp David talks of 2000 were based on; it's what former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's talks with the Palestinians was based on.

The newsworthy and real shift in U.S. policy was President Obama publicly condemning the Palestinian strategy to seek recognition as a state from the U.N. General Assembly in September.

Instead of thanking Obama for this, Prime Minister Netanyahu chose to stage, in the words of the former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas, "Nothing less than a bizarre tirade at the White House on Friday, educating the president about the plight and the pogroms of Jews throughout history."

So why did Netanyahu do this? Does it help Israel's security or strengthen it otherwise to stoke tensions with its strongest ally and largest benefactor, Washington? Does such behavior further the resolution of Israel's problems?

No, but it helps Netanyahu stir up support at home and maintain his fragile coalition.

The real revelation, which has been picked up by many in the Israeli press, is that it shows finally that Netanyahu simply doesn't want a deal. He always has a new objection, a new problem, a new delaying tactic because, at core, he has never believed that the Palestinians should have a state.

Here is the young Bibi, 33 years ago, at a forum in Cambridge, Massachusetts:

"I think the United States should oppose the creation of a Palestinian state for several reasons, the first one being that it is unjust to demand the creation of a 22nd Arab state and a second Palestinian state at the expense of the only Jewish state. There is no right to establish the second one on my doorstep, which will threaten my existence. There is no right whatsoever."

Prime Minister Netanyahu's references to the indefensible borders of 1967 last week also reveal him to be mired in a world that has really gone away. The chief threat to Israel today is not from a Palestinian army. Israel has the region's strongest economy and military by far, complete with an arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The chief threats to Israel are from new technologies - rockets and biological weapons - and from demography. Its physical existence is less in doubt than its democratic existence as it continues to rule millions of Palestinians who are entitled to neither a vote nor a country.

Ironically, the young Bibi understood that it was impossible to keep the Palestinians in such serf-like conditions forever. Listen to him advocating that Palestinians should be given citizenship, either in Jordan or in Israel:

"In the event that this negotiation process will continue, I am sure that what we're talking about is, in fact, eventual citizenship of some kind, either Jordanian or Israeli or in any other arrangement."

If the Palestinians were smart, they'd take Prime Minister Netanyahu up on that offer of citizenship in Israel, and then Bibi would wish he had been for a two-state solution all along.

It is very difficult to watch CNN anymore when such strange and creepy individuals as Zakaria are spouting their twisted points of view. Why not try just giving us the news again instead of this constant obama ass kissing. It really is disgusting. There is literally no "media" in this country any longer.

This is why CNN stands for the Communist News Network. Any fine station would have fired such a leftist. This is why we need to fear all the Jihadists you never know if they are your neighbors or they work for CNN.

Obama wants Jews dead (a good muslim). Why does Israel have to give up land, when Jordan is Palestine. These Arabs wants us dead. If Israel gives to this request, we are doing suicide!

Hey, just so you know, America is a multi cultural society that welcomes Jews and Muslims alike. So when you attempt to insult our president and the Muslims in our country, we are offended!

      LG Douchebag,

the world is a lot bigger than just your littelamericancentric village...its no wonder aholes like you give americans a bad name abroad.

Those articles are excellent reads for anyone who is REALLY interested in the discussion taking place. If you want to close your borders and isolate yourself like the nazi wannabees of the 1930's and now the Pauls, go ahead....your living in the dark ages pal....

That's right pal, I am “Americancentric,” you know why? Because I am an American you bafoon! Also I wonder if our support for your petty squabble over there might be part of the reason we are hated in so many places abroad.

And I don’t want to close our borders and isolate us, I just want us to focus us on our interests, not yours. Why don’t you make a coherent argument for how supporting either your position or the Palestinian position is in our interests and worth the unbelievable price we have paid for it…

Yes! The fact that Netanyahu doen't want an agreement or peace is readily apparent to anyone with clarity of vision. Without turmoil, there would be no more excuse for land grabs. If he were serious about seeking pece he would stop any new settlements. Each new settlement extends the amount of West Bank territory required for a buffer zone.

I remember when Israel gave Gaza to them and what they got in return? Rockets every day. They should never go back to the 1967 borders, because in all the wars that were fought with the Arabs and Israel the Palestinians were on the side of the Arabs and the Moved to refugee camps so that the Pan Arab armies would destroy the Jews and they would get all the land.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Will the free world keep repeating the mistakes?
    Will they ever learn?
The democratic ideology that works for the west free world mindset is nor one size feet all ideology.
The Arabs and some Muslims countries mindset is based on different ideology and values that have not changed for the past 1400 years.
Time to focus against the ideology using the terror tool should be the long time strategic goal.
Time to focus only acting against terrorists is the wrong long time strategic goal.
Major actions should be taken against countries protecting and funding the Islamist ideology.
Teaching and preaching hating infidels worldwide.
The terror is only one of many tactical tools used to enforce:
The defending democracies should demand in exchange for any help to outlaw Islamist parties such as Muslim Brotherhood.
They are using the democratic system to get power and later to act against the free world.
    Hisbulla control of Lebanon.
    Hamas control of Gaza.
    Islamist Theocrats control of Iran.
Removing Musharaff from power in Pakistan results: 40% of the country is controlled by Islamists.
Currently the Arabs spring looks like more of the gate to a long winter for the west.
Parties such Muslim brotherhood are on the way to power:
    Muslim brotherhood leaders declared that:
*Osama Ben Laden was a Muslim martyr
*Hitler didn’t finish the job- The Muslims will finish
*Christians will not be allowed in management government position un top of Muslims
*A counsel of clerics will monitor and impose that the elected government will follow Islam law-Sharia
*Woman will follow Islamic home duties
    * Muslims can come closer to Allah by waging jihad against all non-Muslims,Christians,Jews, atheists, in every possible manner
Never was anything great achieved without courageously facing the real problem

You are somewhat right. The Islamic world is based on a complete different set of values. We are based on the Ten Commandments, we are based on moral and immoral, on family values. The shariah prevents crime and promotes upholding these values among Muslims. It also calls for non-muslims in the state to have their own laws. Adultery, date rap,,gambling, alcohol, murder, stealing, lieing, back biting, incest, pornography, and interest are all banned. Yeah I see how bad shariah is. The women being stoned to death are cultural issues and not really the islamic law. That too would be banned. There is nothing but respect among religious Muslims for Jews and Christians. But it has to be mutual.
Remember the OTTOMANS, the ANDALUCIANS, it can work and will work. I agree with you that Western Democracy will not work but a Middle Eastern style democracy based on islamic values can work. If it is the Caliphate that will be awesome. THE UNITED ISLAMIC STATES. I like it. Less FIFA teams. Go Arab and Muslim Spring. Free Al Quds.

Finally some one was brave enough to come out and say the truth about the Israeli intention of real peace. The Israeli intention is very clear, let’s talk about peace, only talk, while we confiscate more land, and kick more Palestinians out of their land. Palestinians are being forced out from their homeland daily by the practices that Israel is taking to seize Israeli IDs with the pretext that Palestinians are loosing their residency status by choosing to live out of Palestine.

Oh look, Obama's little, brain dead, muslim, media puppet spouting off about the administration's anti-Israel propaganda. Tell all of the biased lies you want Fareed, none of it changes the fact that a vast majority of the country sides with freedom and Democracy and not the vile scum of our enemies in islam. Look at all the loony libs rush to defend theocracy, tyranny and misogamy, running to the side of the nation's enemies at the expense of our friends all because it's politically correct in the ivory towers of liberalism. Libs are cowards and useful idiots our islamic enemies use to further their cause. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad to see these imbecile liberals used the way they are.

Note to Israel the World is changing. We are broke. Netanyahu himself is a terrorist and an extreme leader that has killed thousands. Israel has right of return for jews, but Palestinians who are willing to live in Israel who just lived there 60 years have no right to return?? WTF. What logic is this. Anything goes for freedom. The double standard american foreign policy to israel expired in tahrir square. The whole Islamic world is changing only a matter time we get back all of Palestine.

Right of return to a land they lost in a war they started, what kind of a moron are you? This is something that has never happened in the history of the world, where a loosing side somehow has the right to go and live on the land of an enemy they lost to under their own self rule! Yes, the world is changing but the idiots will never be in charge and their solutions will never work anyway. They should go back to Jordan or Egypt or Syria to live. I can understand why they don't want to, but that's no reason for Israel to by sympathetic. There is no right of return for losers, and thinking that is right is just plain idiocy!

As long as no radiation hits our shores, why should we care? I do feel sorry for Palestinian women but that's true for women in a lot of Muslim countries, we can't help everybody.

Hey toto, go back to Kansas. Please ask the neighbooring Arab countries why they dont allow palestinians into their country. Also weird that so many Arabs live in Israel, how many Jews live in other Arab Nations. First thing you should do is return your home and property to the native people of our land who YOUR forefathers didnt asimilate but raped and killed. Instead of going back to Kansas move to New Mexico with the Isleta Tribe and see the true Americans your family and forefathers wanted you to forget

Hey J, nice try but you showed your true colors with the comment right before this one. So why should we care about Israel again? What do we get from them?

Instead of going back to Kansas move to New Mexico with the Isleta Tribe and see the true Americans your family and forefathers wanted you to forget."

Everyday, Americans are waking up to the reality that you don't care about us. So guess what, we have decided we don't care about you. While netanyahu be be more of a hawk then his predecessor Olmert in what he is willing to give up, how can anyone forget Camp david in 2000? How quickly we forget that this whole ordeal could have been somewhat completed if Arafat wasnt a coward and accepted the extremelygenerous offer given to him by Clinton and Barak. 97% of the land requested and no is the response? Great negotiating by Arafat wouldnt you say? That was the closest thye ever came to a state that they deserve to have. Why does no one mention that? Arafat once told clinton you are a great success to which he replied Im a failure and its because of you! Does anyone recall that the original plan to partition the land back in 1947 was accepted by Israel and rejected by the Arabs? Not just a no but lets talk about it, a total rejection by reply of 5 armies invading. I am the first to say that both sides have doen things in history that are questionable, but its clear that no offer is good enough for the palestinians unless Israel is pushed into the sea!

I think Fareed Zakaria has it right. Israel has kept 3 million people trapped in concentration camps for decades. The Israeli's have used bulldozers to raze Palestinian homes and soldiers to forcibly expand settlements in the name of god for god's chosen people, treat them as animals, remove educational opportunity, remove hope and use F16s to respond to outbreaks. Then lambast them when they act out ... good recipe for a leader to stay in power and to hold the US hostage to public opinion. What would happen if politicians stopped ratcheting up the rhetoric? When politician's succeed in polarizing public opinion ... only the politicians win.

The one thing people seem to forget is that the Palestinians were offered a '48 and several times after Oslo...all Arafat had to do was say "Yes". But the Palestinians, always hoping for more, have progressively been offered less and less. As a Jew, I personally cannot care about the fairness to the Palestinians. (Jordan is a "Palestinian" nation.) I need one place in the world where I can always go, if the majority religion where I live decides to start killing its, historically, they all seem to do eventually. I love America. I consider myself a very patriotic American. I have lived & studied in Israel, & enjoyed it. But, it is not my home. However, I am not foolish enough to assume that I, and my descendants, will always be welcome in the US...or anywhere else. Was it right to form Israel in "Palestine"? I couldn't care less. Israel is Jewish and must remain so.

I disagree with the notion that Netanyahu does not want a deal. Obviously he is holding out for better terms than he's likely to get as of now, but that doesn't inherently mean he's opposed to negotiations. The Palestinians, on the other hand, would more fairly have this charge leveled at them. One of the major Palestinian factions (now united with the other) refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist. Quite frankly Israel would have to be suicidal or grossly incompetent to give anything to people who clearly seek its destruction. And don't forget that the media crucifies Israel for every injustice, real or perceived, while any offenses made by the Palestinians (say, the Fogel murders) are glossed over and/or made out to be Israel's fault. In this climate the Palestinians believe they can garner enough international support to unilaterally establish a state. Why would they ever seriously negotiate if they think they get just about everything they want forced upon Israel?

    May 30, 2011 at 12:31 pm |
  27. LG

@Dan, why do you have to lie in order to get our support for YOUR problems. You stated "What did you get from Israelis, LG? Try flash memory, cell phone, Intel chips, multiple sclerosis medicine, cancer medicine, etc etc etc"

Flash memory was invented by Fujio Masuoka, Japanese.
The cellphone was invented by Martin Cooper, an AMERICAN.
Intel, founded by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce, AMERICANS.

We are very proud of all the Jewish Americans that have contributed to this country, but a contribution from a specific ethnic group to our nation doesn't mean we have any obligations to that ethnic group. This is like suggesting we should subjugate our interests to the Chinese because Chinese immigrants built the railroads in this country. This country belongs to everyone.

And now...for once...I will quote the Republicans....USA, USA, USA, USA!

    May 30, 2011 at 12:32 pm |
    • Dan

you do not know what you are talking about.Dr. Eli Harari, an Israeli engineer, began making early contributions to EEPROM – electrically erasable programmable read-only memory, a precursor to flash memory. Harari worked on flash memory at Intel, leaving to found a start-up which failed. In 1988, Harari launched the company that would become SanDisk with former Intel colleague Sanjay Mehrotra and former Hughes Electronics colleague Jack Yuan.[3]

Early on, SanDisk had recognized that digital cameras would need digital storage, and computers could become ever more mobile and light and would require a similar storage technology. In 1988 Harari offered the flash memory card technology to Kodak for inclusion in their cameras. Kodak offered to fund the development with the condition that SanDisk offer a three year exclusive contract for the 'digital film'. Harari and SanDisk rejected the offer, preferring to have competition in the marketplace.
Yes Intel is a US company. But for your information, all great Intel chips were developed at Intel Israel, by Israel engineers. Prove me wrong, if you can, you ignoramus. Motorola cell phone development took place mostly at their Israeli R&D facilities, by Israeli engineers. You should know that. Dan, lets assume you are right about the inventor of flash memory...You didn't address my second point, does this mean we should subjugate the interests of all 300 Million plus Americans for one ethnic group?

They gave up on Aristotle and favored mysticism. When the European Renaissance began they slowly lost ground. They did it to themselves, and you must know what that's like.

Why the United States wastes time, effort and money on any of the rogue nations in the region is beyond me. Let the animals fight and kill each other over the worthless dirt without the help, influence or money of the US.

IWith friends like Israel, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan who needs enemies?

The Israelis are not foreign occupiers. This is a myth. How can you be a foreign occupier when you are the original inhabitants. The Jews have been in Israel for over 4000 years. This is an indisputable fact. If you are a member of any monotheistic religion you must agree with this statement. If you believe all legitimate historians you must as well. Jews have always lived in Israel. We have a rig to live in Israel. The UN legitimized this right. If you want to condemn Israel for taking additional lands than I would like to see the same outrage at Jordan. After all I am sure that Jordan plans to give Transjordan back to the Palestinians, right? Arer Lebanon and Jordan planning a right of return for the Palestinians. The facts are the facts and they are undeniable. Just as native Americans have a right to their original lands so do the Jews. I do believe in a two state solution but one that is rational. The Palestinian authority has one responsibility and that is to cause endless conflict with Israel until it can destroy the Jewish state. It has been given this task by the rest of the Arab world. Why do you think Jordan will not take the refuges. After all they are fellow Muslims. They do not because this would end the conflict right now. As a liberal how can you not support a people who believe in our same values and freedoms. Why would you support a government that supports murder and supresses human rights and freedom for women. Fools.

I'm not sure of what to make of the lot of you. Half of you sound as if it is a shame that the Final Solution didn't succeed with a quarter of you sounding like Helen Thomas. Its been said that two of the most defining attributes of liberalism is obejectiveness and tolerance, but I'm observing very little of either.

Yes Mark, anyone that is upset by BIBI coming to America and insulting our president thinks "it is a shame that the Final Solution didn't succeed."

Tell BIBI to apologize to our president and we will consider sending you your foreign aid of $3 billion next year!
