Fareed's Take: Netanyahu doesn't want a deal

We've just gone through an arcane debate about whether Barack Obama said anything new when he called for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement based on 1967 borders with mutually agreed upon land swaps. In fact, that has been the working assumption of all negotiating parties - America, Israel and the Palestinian Authority - for over 20 years. It is what the Camp David talks of 2000 were based on; it's what former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's talks with the Palestinians was based on.

The newsworthy and real shift in U.S. policy was President Obama publicly condemning the Palestinian strategy to seek recognition as a state from the U.N. General Assembly in September.

Instead of thanking Obama for this, Prime Minister Netanyahu chose to stage, in the words of the former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas, "Nothing less than a bizarre tirade at the White House on Friday, educating the president about the plight and the pogroms of Jews throughout history."

So why did Netanyahu do this? Does it help Israel's security or strengthen it otherwise to stoke tensions with its strongest ally and largest benefactor, Washington? Does such behavior further the resolution of Israel's problems?

No, but it helps Netanyahu stir up support at home and maintain his fragile coalition.

The real revelation, which has been picked up by many in the Israeli press, is that it shows finally that Netanyahu simply doesn't want a deal. He always has a new objection, a new problem, a new delaying tactic because, at core, he has never believed that the Palestinians should have a state.

Here is the young Bibi, 33 years ago, at a forum in Cambridge, Massachusetts:

"I think the United States should oppose the creation of a Palestinian state for several reasons, the first one being that it is unjust to demand the creation of a 22nd Arab state and a second Palestinian state at the expense of the only Jewish state. There is no right to establish the second one on my doorstep, which will threaten my existence. There is no right whatsoever."

Prime Minister Netanyahu's references to the indefensible borders of 1967 last week also reveal him to be mired in a world that has really gone away. The chief threat to Israel today is not from a Palestinian army. Israel has the region's strongest economy and military by far, complete with an arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The chief threats to Israel are from new technologies - rockets and biological weapons - and from demography. Its physical existence is less in doubt than its democratic existence as it continues to rule millions of Palestinians who are entitled to neither a vote nor a country.

Ironically, the young Bibi understood that it was impossible to keep the Palestinians in such serf-like conditions forever. Listen to him advocating that Palestinians should be given citizenship, either in Jordan or in Israel:

"In the event that this negotiation process will continue, I am sure that what we're talking about is, in fact, eventual citizenship of some kind, either Jordanian or Israeli or in any other arrangement."

If the Palestinians were smart, they'd take Prime Minister Netanyahu up on that offer of citizenship in Israel, and then Bibi would wish he had been for a two-state solution all along.

Barbara! Bravo on and right on the money:
" Muslims don’t give a damn about the Palestinians they are killing each other in every Muslim country every minute they use israel as an excuse to hate the Jews and u liberals are buying their propaganda against the Jews"
So true!!!! But raidicalized muslims, there are peaceloving gentle muslims that don't belong to this hatred driven category. TG Osama got killed, he was feeding and financing this hatred and now Zakaria is trying to ignite this sentiment, its just he aint got the money to support it so he is using the US public media. He is a disguised Jihadist. Every time the word "Israel” is mentioned in the news, flocks of maggots and vultures coming out spitting biological hatred at the only humane and moral society amidst stone age fanatical mob. The context of the news doesn't matter, the keyword is Israel. The arguments are pointless. The supporters of Israel are on defensive trying to argue with historical facts and logical arguments. The non-Islamic enemies of Israel are just anti-Semitic and use Israel as pretext to express their anti Jewish feelings. The Islamic enemies of Israel are preprogrammed to hate the Jews and Israel by their "peaceful” religion and Quran. The Islamic Arab mentality is very simple – blood and murder. In Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere they killed 10 times more of their own people that all coalition forces. The enemies of Israel don’t care about so called "Palestinians", they use the conflict to feed their hatred. As of conflict, Golda Meir said “We can forgive you for killing our sons. But we will never forgive you for making us kill yours. The peace will be only when Arabs will love their children more than they hate us".

    It will never happen.

There is nothing new about Zakaria's anti-Semitic, pro-Moslem attitude. Always blame Israel. Never blame the Palestinians-Arabs-Moslems who refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state in any borders - just like the Charters of both Fatah and Hamas say; just like Hizbollah says; just like The Islamic Republic of Iran says. In fact, the entire Moslem world refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist in any borders, and the reason for that is that the Koran specifically requires Moslems to make war against Jews (and Christians) and to subjugate them to Islamic rule. (Koran 9:29). Either Zakaria doesn't know about this, which makes him an incompetent journalist; or he isn't telling, which makes him disreputable. For him to trash Netanyahu is disgraceful.

If Netanyahu doesn't want a deal, that's the only obstacle to peace in the region? Because then we must suppose that Hamas wants a deal, and Hezbollah wants a deal, and the dictators and warlords and mystics and kings that support them with petrodollars and safe havens want a deal.

Here's another explanation. The Arab world lost touch with the Renaissance, went mad centuries ago, and exists today as the recipient of stolen goods: the oil developed by others. America needs the oil badly, and so America puts out more and more excuses as to why Israel isn't a worthy ally. It is, but the American public is in appeasement mode and will jump at any propaganda that excuses their own cowardice. Americans who feel that way are not worthy of groups like Seal Team 6 and the many others we will never hear about.

Israel's Bold Faced Lies Become Media Truths for Americans

There are four very conspicuous and dangerous bold-faced Zionist (Israeli) lies about the ongoing Israeli-American genocidal campaign being waged in Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Because these lies are repeated without question by the Zionist-controlled mainstream media in the United States, it is urgent to point out the falseness of these first four Zionist lies which are blindly accepted as truth by many Americans.

BOLD-FACED ISRAELI LIE No. 1: Hezbollah had fired missiles from the location where 60 Lebanese civilians were massacred as they slept in a basement where they had sought shelter in Cana of Galilee (Qana, Lebanon).

The Plain Truth: "There were no rocket launches from Qana on the day of the strike," Ha'aretz (Israel) reported today:

"As the Israel Air Force continues to investigate the air strike, questions have been raised over military accounts of the incident.

"It now appears that the military had no information on rockets launched from the site of the building, or the presence of Hezbollah men at the time.

"The Israel Defense Forces had said after the deadly air-strike that many rockets had been launched from Qana. However, it changed its version on Monday.

"The site was included in an IAF plan to strike at several buildings in proximity to a previous launching site. Similar strikes were carried out in the past. However, there were no rocket launches from Qana on the day of the strike."

BOLD-FACED ISRAELI LIE No. 2: "We want it to be clear it was not a deliberate attack because Israel would never target a UN force. It is not part of our policies; it is not part of our values."
    – Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni,

The Plain Truth: Livni's statement is a nothing but an Israeli bold-faced lie. Israel has often targeted UN bases, apart from the recent massacre the most egregious Israeli atrocity committed against a UN base occurred on April 18, 1996, during the Israeli "Grapes of Wrath" aggression against Lebanon, when prime minister Shimon Peres (now vice premier) ordered the precision-guided artillery shelling of the FIJIBATT UN base at Qana (Cana) in which hundreds of Lebanese had sought shelter. More than 106 Lebanese civilians, most of them children, were killed in this deliberate attack on a UN base.

From Robert Fisk's April 19, 1996 article "Massacre in Sanctuary" in The Independent (UK):

Qana, southern Lebanon – It was a massacre. Not since Sabra and Chatila had I seen the innocent slaughtered like this. The Lebanese refugee women and children and men lay in heaps, their hands or arms or legs missing, beheaded or disemboweled. There were well over a hundred of them. A baby lay without a head. The Israeli shells had scythed through them as they lay in the United Nations shelter, believing that they were safe under the world's protection. Like the Muslims of Srebrenica, the Muslims of Qana were wrong.

In front of a burning building of the UN's Fijian battalion headquarters, a girl held a corpse in her arms, the body of a grey- haired man whose eyes were staring at her, and she rocked the corpse back and forth in her arms, keening and weeping and crying the same words over and over: "My father, my father." A Fijian UN soldier stood amid a sea of bodies and, without saying a word, held aloft the body of a headless child.

"The Israelis have just told us they'll stop shelling the area", a UN soldier said, shaking with anger. "Are we supposed to thank them?" In the remains of a burning building – the conference room of the Fijian UN headquarters – a pile of corpses was burning. The roof had crashed in flames onto their bodies, cremating them in front of my eyes. When I walked towards them, I slipped on a human hand...

Israel's slaughter of civilians in this terrible 10-day offensive – 206 by last night – has been so cavalier, so ferocious, that not a Lebanese will forgive this massacre. There had been the ambulance attacked on Saturday, the sisters killed in Yohmor the day before, the 2-year-old girl decapitated by an Israeli missile four days ago. And earlier yesterday, the Israelis had slaughtered a family of 12 – the youngest was a four- day-old baby – when Israeli helicopter pilots fired missiles into their home.

BOLD-FACED ISRAELI LIE No. 3: Israel does not target civilians or ambulances.

The Plain Truth: The fact that nearly 1,000 Lebanese civilians have been killed by the current Israeli onslaught in Lebanon, and some 20,000 were killed in Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon should suffice to expose this lie, but for more on this subject see, Jonathan Cook's article "Targeting Civilians As Deliberate Strategy: Israel’s Indiscriminate Onslaughts."

Targeting Ambulances: That Israel targets ambulances is obvious from the news reports that show that Israeli missiles struck Lebanese ambulances piercing the ambulance exactly in the center of the red cross that is painted on the roof of the ambulance. For more on this subject see Robert Fisk's article, "Israeli missiles had clearly pierced the very centre of the red cross on the roof of each ambulance."

Fisk wrote: "And how come – since this now obsesses the humanitarian organisations working in Lebanon – that the Israelis bombed two ambulances in Qana, killing two of the wounded inside and wounding the third civilian for the second time in a day. All the crews were injured – one with a piece of shrapnel in his neck – but what worried the Lebanese Red Cross was that the Israeli missiles had clearly pierced the very centre of the red cross painted on the roof of each vehicle. Did the pilots use the cross as their aiming point?"

NB – This is the kind of pin-point accuracy of these air launched missiles. This is precisely how I believe that Israel killed Rafik Hariri. Except in the Hariri murder Israeli used a larger warhead with delayed fusing in order to cause a massive crater.

BOLD-FACED ISRAELI LIE No. 4: The two captured Israeli soldiers were kidnapped in Israel.

The Plain Truth: Hezbollah, branded a "terrorist" group by the Zionist controlled government and media in the United, was blamed for having sparked the crisis by having "kidnapped" two Israeli soldiers from Israeli territory on July 12.

The initial news reports, however, which have not been retracted or disproven, indicate that the two Israeli soldiers were not kidnapped at all. They were captured – inside Lebanon – after having crossed the border and entered the Lebanese village of Aitaa al-Chaab.

The fact that Israeli soldiers were captured inside Lebanon was initially reported by a number of leading international press services, including the German news agency (DPA), AP, AFP from France, and UPI Arabia, but was never mentioned by the Zionist-controlled mass media outlets in the U.S.

Here, for example, it one of the 10 Deutsche Presse Agentur's (DPA) articles on this matter from July 12, 2006:

Beirut (dpa) – The Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement announced Wednesday that its guerrillas have captured two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.

"Implementing our promise to release the Arab prisoners in Israeli jails, our strugglers have captured at 9:05 am (0605 GMT) two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon," a statement by Hezbollah said.

"The two soldiers have already been moved to a safe place," it added.

Lebanese police said that the two soldiers were captured as they "infiltrated" into the town of Aitaa al-Chaab inside the Lebanese border.

Israeli aircraft were active in the air over southern Lebanon, police said, with jets bombing roads leading to the market town of Nabatiyeh, 60 kilometres south of Beirut.

Lebanese security sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the planes were bombarding roads which might be used by Hezbollah guerrillas.

"Tension is very high in the area ... We are expecting escalation by the Israelis," the sources said.

There was no immediate confirmation of the Hezbollah claims from any official Israeli source. An Israeli army spokeswoman however said there was "concern" over the fate of the two soldiers.

Photo: One of the grisly photos of the massacre inflicted on Lebanese civilians sheltering in the UN camp at Cana in April 1996. The Israeli army deliberately targeted the FIJIBATT UN camp knowing full well that hundreds of Lebanese refugees were sheltering there.

Hey Anya, newsflash: Israel is not "occupying" anyone's land. It's their's now.

Get it? If they lost the '67 war they would never have taken that land. But they won. When battles are fought, borders are won. Some examples of "occupied" lands might be California... or Texas... or England. I don't see much hope today for the descendents of the Saxons who might want the UK back. Or the Mexicans who wish California was still part of Rosarito Beach. So get a grip and stop wallowing in this Arab-victim biased crap. The terrorist Arab states tried a power play against the Jewish state plain and simple and basically got their asses whupped. And now they want that land back. Fat chance. They're lucky Israel didn't take all of it. For my own part, it is not hard to see the true villian here. But then again, I am not an Arab-loving, self-serving, left-wing bleeding heart liberal. Anyone who blames Israel and supports Hamas chooses to remain blind, prejudice or both. Instead of firing rockets into schools, the Palestinians should ask the Arab League for some of that oil money to prop up their sorry economy. Funny, isn't it? Even the Arabs won't help the Palestinians.

No nation or race of people who openly declare that their goal is the complete destruction of another race of people, should ever be considered a legitimate nation.

According to UN Charter, which both the USA and Israel has adopted by treaty, it is illegal to acquire land by military conquest regardless who the aggressor is. Land captured by Israel is referred to as "occupied territory" by the USA and international community for a reason. It is not recognized as Israel's land. For this reason, the USA and most of the countries around the world have their embassy in Tel Aviv rather than Jerusalem.

Furthermore, according to UN Security Council resolution 242, which was adopted UNANIMOUSLY in 1967 shortly after Israel captured these territories, Israel is required to withdraw from these 'occupied territories.' This was a binding resolution that Israel has not complied to.

By the way, Israel was the aggressor in the 1967 six day war. It's purpose was to grab more land.

Second, in the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt (Camp David Accords) that were brokered by President Carter, Israel agreed to grant the Palestinians in the occupied territories 'FULL autonomy." Israel never held up to its bargain.

Furthermore, Israel was admitted to the United Nations on condition that it allow the Palestinians refugees the right to return to their homes they were expelled from in 1948. Israel promised to do so but never allowed hundreds of thousands of civilians return to their homes. This also violates the UN Charter of Human Rights and Geneva Convention.

Jihad is a world war that began with the partition of India even before the partition of Palestine, although Nazi collaborators were active in the Arab world for at least a decade earlier. The war is Jihad against all world religions, including traditional Islam. The war is being fought on six continents. The beheading of Catholics in the Philippines is not due to failed negotiations over water rights on the Jordanian border. The war is an effort to impose the Middle Ages on a modern secular world. Israel is merely one front in that war of Jihad xenophobia.

Someday, the world is going to realize that this fight for land is unjust. Both side have their flaws. Israelis were their first, but this does not give them the right to eradicate a specific group people and defy U.N. law by occupying land that they do not control. If someday Native Americans want their land back and start killing off modern Americans to get it, I am sure someone would speak up then. Hamas, while being a terrorist group, is the only defense that Palestinians have against the trillions of dollars worth of U.S. provided weaponry and training. While they do fight back, their attacks are very weak, ineffective, and unorganized but yet receive credit for being terrorist masterminds and murderers. Palestinian blood has been on hands of the Israelis for over 40 years now is wrong and should be recognized. Americans did it to the Japanese, Nazi's to the Jews, and now Israeli's to the Palestinians. At least my kids will be able read about it in their history books after the world sees the truth.

Instead of looking for solution you people tend to blame one another Israel did this Palestine did that. whats done is done so time to move on and look for better solution where people don't have to die for no apparent reason. Further whats right is right and whats wrong is wrong, whats amazing to me is that an Israeli person won't recognize where Israel is at fault and same goes for the Palestine person. I have seen these two races kill each other since i was a child and as far as i know it has nothing to do with piece of land, rather it has everything to do with race and hate. am sure both palestine and israel can live in one place with peace but that will never happen because the hate they have for one another. Its truly sad.

First of all, anyone who calls Israel "the Zionists" cannot be impartial.
If the Palestinians were to show some responsibility just once the situation may be different. When Israel left Gaza they not only ripped it to shreds but they "voted" in the terrorists (hamas (lower case h)) to rule it and now that's where all the missiles are coming from even when things are quiet otherwise. How can Israel be expected to negotiate with a terrorist group that doesn't recognize its right to exist? Let them sign that piece of paper, so easy to sign something but they won't do it. It seems that the Palestinians in the west Bank and the ones that make up most of the population of
Jordan are decent people...they should be smart enough tos to stop associatign with terrorists. Bad decisons have been screwing them for decades...they should learn from their mistakes once and for all. And by the way, let's turn back America's borders to 1959 before Hawaii was a state and negate Obamas citizenship...what a stupid suggestion, turning back to 67 borders.

"If the Palestinians were smart, they'd take Prime Minister Netanyahu up on that offer of citizenship in Israel, and then Bibi would wish he had been for a two-state solution all along."

Sounds like a threat to me.

wow, is america screwing itself with all the muslims it lets in or what! just look at this forum.....full of neo nazi morons and islamic jihadis...and all on CNN! Anywhere in the world they go, the muslims ruin their host countries. It's in every country, every town...same thing. Too bad obama has this obsession of wanting to make them like us....problem is, this predates israel, predates the US in fact...this is an ongoing problem globally for the last 1000 yrs.

again, this is NOT about the west bank and gaza...don't let the media fool you.....this IS about israel proper. Netanyahu is liked by a majority of israelis in a real democracy. Thats the way it goes...same as the arabs elected sharon, they also elected bibi. Israel has made peace before with jordan and egypt. They will do so again if its a real peace deal. So far, the pals aren't offering anything...nada, zip. anyhow, nothing will solve this....the only way out is war and war it shall be....israel will one day have to crush its enemies like the bugs they are...CRUSH! Everyone on this forum who hates jews but wants peace should be THANKFUL that israel is as MERCIFUL as it has been....we could have crushed ALL the surrounding countries in minutes if we wanted..literally in minutes. You want peace? BEG for your crappy little state you will eventually run into the ground. BEG!

Well put! But, I respectfully differ with you on one point.

Mr. Zakaria is smart, intelligent, and knowledgeable but NOT the least naive or even a liberal in the general sense. Liberals like Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer, Tom Freidmann etc. generally fight for freedoms for all peoples, especially the minorities (the militant/radical ones) even at the cost of being insensitive to the majority as well as all other minorities (e.g. 9/11 controversy). At best these liberals are naive and a have a totally "unrealistic" & "skewed" view of the world.

On the contrary my former countryman Mr. Fareed Zakaria is a Muslim, and like the VAST MAJORITY of Muslims in the world he hates America, Israel and the entire free world, and believes that the entire non-Muslim world is ganged up against Islam. He fights for almost every Muslim cause in the world be it Palestine, Chechnya, Kosovo, Bosnia etc, and also just as his ilk all over the world NEVER EVER FAILS to connect Muslim discontent (incl. American Muslims) with every other real & perceived inequality against Muslims anywhere in the world, e.g. Burka ban in France, Minaret ban in Switzerland, opposition to GZ VICTORY Mosque, enhanced interrogation of terrorists, security checks at a/ps etc. etc. He has FAMOUSLY SAID several times that EVEN AL-QAEDA’s hatredness for America is due to our policies! He has also been valiantly fighting to embrace Muslim Turkey and Kosovo into the EU to open the doors for Muslim migration into Europe and America for our rapid Islamization. And he has also been tirelessly linking worldwide Islamic terror to their backwardness (& NOT idealogy) urging already hard hit Americans to part more of their money (that they don’t have!) to aid these ungrateful people.

So, lots of people confuse his SUGAR COATED msgs. as proof that he is all fair & balanced, w/o realizing that it's all a PLOY to TRAP gullible Americans into his line of thinking. He excels in making some broad sweeping statements condemning "VERY SELECTIVELY" certain terrorist acts, cherry picking facts, twisting/spinning facts out of context, referencing dubious studies (often from well known institutions infiltrated by Islamist supporters – e.g. Fawz Gerges of the London School of Economics) and deliberately ignoring other facts/ominous signs all of which seem OUTWARDLY fair & balanced for a gullible reader. Just scratch the surface and you see a ton of hidden messages trashing Israel, America and the entire free world.

In that sense his writings are always highly predictable.

I have written quite extensively to expose my former countryman.

The biggest danger from this man is that he's one of the key advisers to Obama in formulating policies on the ME and the entire Muslim world.
