Lithuanian mayor crushes car in parking video

Editor's Note: The following text is from GlobalPost, which provides excellent coverage of world news – important, moving and just odd.

The mayor of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius wants people to know he doesn't like people parking in his city's bike lanes. To demonstrate his feelings on the issue, the city government has released a video of the mayor, Arturas Zuokas, riding proudly on top of an armored personnel carrier as it crushes an illegally parked Mercedes.

The video was a stunt — the city bought the car — but the mayor's spokesperson Irma Juskenaite told The Guardian that Zuokas wanted to send a message.

"Mayor Zuokas wanted his message to be loud and clear that the city will not tolerate brazen and disrespectful behaviour by drivers who disobey parking rules," Juskenaite said.

In voiceover during the video, Zuokas denounces drivers of expensive cars who park where they want.

"In the past few days, expensive cars have been illegally parked in almost this exact same place — a Rolls Royce and a Ferrari. What should the city do about drivers who think that they are above the law?" Zuokas says. "It seems that a tank is the best solution."

The end of the video features shots of Zuokas sweeping up some of the mess made by the armored personnel carrier, and then biking away from the scene.

That mayor is an idiot and a teabagger. I'm sure he has more important things to do like give aid to the millions of poor children in Lithuania.

Are you serious? He is the greatest major that Vilnius have ever had during the last 20 years. He rebuilt the city form soviet era to modern, western style booming city. If you from lithuania you should know that. But if not I tell you, he is the greatest major that we ever had.

Sorry to ruin it for you all. This was a prank paid by a Swedish television show called “99 things you have to do before you die”. The two hosts are the other two guys seen on the so called tank. But still quite funny...

Interesting. Seems that in Europe there is a bit of hatred for the super wealthy doing what they want with the mayor saying, "In the past few days, expensive cars have been illegally parked in almost this exact same place". Wonder how we can get a bit of that injected into the states. I'll try to start by saying that the American Dream is dead. You will never be the super rich, so start taxing them. OK everyone else, your turn!

I'm glad some government exists which can still afford to buy mercedes and crush them, thats real economic genius. This MORON should have crushed a couple dozen real cars on the street, that would have been news worthy. Too bad the APC didnt roll over and splatter this clown.

In Chicago, the bicyclists are more a pain in the katushka than the motorists, especially the obnoxious bike messengers. Perhaps an APC might be able to deal with this problem...

There is a simple solution... fines could be a hefty function of one's average yearly declared salary and the value of the car for example.

Hi, I'm a direct response advertiser and would like to scale one of my campaigns and test on your inventory directly. I'd like to do a test buy on as soon as possible. Can we discuss this in more detail today?

This picture gives not real image of Vilnius. In fact there is no tanks or other military equipment (only in museums). Vilnius is normal city with a lot of new developments and new residential-apartment projects. Many of those are listed here:
