Fareed's Take: U.S. has made war on terror a war without end

By Fareed Zakaria, CNN

Whatever you thought of President Obama's recent speech on Afghanistan, it is now increasingly clear that the United States is winding down its massive military commitments to the two wars of the last decade.

We are out of Iraq and we will soon be largely out of Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden is dead, and al Qaeda is a shadow of its former self. Threats remain but these are being handled using special forces and intelligence. So, finally, after a decade, we seem to be right-sizing the threat from terrorist groups.

Or are we?

While we will leave the battlefields of the greater Middle East, we are firmly committed to the war on terror at home. What do I mean by that? Well, look at the expansion of federal bureaucracies to tackle this war.

Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. government has created or reconfigured at least 263 organizations to tackle some aspect of the war on terror. Thirty-three new building complexes have been built for the intelligence bureaucracies alone, occupying 17 million square feet – the equivalent of 22 U.S. Capitols or three Pentagons. The largest bureaucracy after the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs is now the Department of Homeland Security, which has a workforce of 230,000 people.

The rise of this national security state has entailed a vast expansion in the government's powers that now touch every aspect of American life, even when seemingly unrelated to terrorism. Some 30,000 people, for example, are now employed exclusively to listen in on phone conversations and other communications within the United States.

In the past, the U.S. government has built up for wars, assumed emergency authority and sometimes abused that power, yet always demobilized after the war. But this is, of course, a war without end.

So we continue to stand in absurd airport lines. We continue to turn down the visa applications of hundreds of thousands of tourists, businessmen, artists and performers who simply want to visit America and spend money here, and become ambassadors of good will for this country. We continue to treat even those visitors who arrive with visas as hostile aliens - checking, searching and deporting people at will. We continue to place new procedures and rules to monitor everything that comes in and out of the country, making doing business in America less attractive and more burdensome than in most Western countries.

We don't look like people who have won a war. We look like scared, fearful, losers.

I want to show thanks to the writer just for rescuing me from this particular situation. Just after researching through the the web and meeting solutions which were not powerful, I figured my life was gone. Being alive without the solutions to the issues you have fixed through your entire short article is a critical case, and ones that might have in a negative way damaged my career if I hadn't come across your site. Trauma therapy is a new field in medication and drug therapy yet.. It is kind of said that human future is built up on generations of neglected and injured people. That seems like a dead end street to me. Each infected generation brings about another one. You just cannot control parental upbringing and directing. And of course MIS- teachings.
That is where alternative people come about. To plant a seed in Culdesac streets. To offer to crack up the waste that built up in the controvertial circulation.
But trauma therapy is similar. You learn to deal even if you can not beat it.

Hate the idea of the Muslim women's going about with the tightest headscarves with such an isuue on hair. Whereas Muslim men go about with so much hair on their faces. Being proud of the amount of hair they can sustain. Kind of funny picture if you ask me.

During the 90's in America on the streets of New York and Los Angles we had singers of Arab American descents who dressed in funky New Jack Swing clothes, and sang with African American artists such as Teddy Riley with African 90's RB vocals mixed with Arab American backing soundtracks on some New Jack Swing songs. It was a clash of different cultures from funky African American New Jack Swing mixed with Arab American singers and rhythm backings does mean all Arabs are terrorists or plotting the next attack on our great nation? Let us as Americans just take a step back and crack a cold one and think for a moment, when we see a young Arab American women dressed in a businesses attire talking on her phone on the NYC subway platform as she laughs into it, should would just assume she is planning to blow up the Statue of Liberty or maybe she talking to her friends. These notations of stereotypical viewpoints on Arab Americans should be questioned at all times, because a few crazy right wing terrorists cells such as ISIS that hates America for we stand for freedom and justice, which goes against the code of hard working Arab Americans who will bleed for country when our freedom is threatened from these radical terrorism groups. What makes us Americans our love for our country when we sing the Star Spangle Banner at the football game or baseball game, or buying that first family home when we live the great American Dream of having a great job after college and paying Uncle Sam with our taxes to pay him back for the student loan we took out to achieve our dreams in this great nation we call America. As Americans like myself who are proud of our US Air Force men and women who risk their lives, to defend our freedom at all costs overseas will the constant threat of living in fear in our great nation form next terrorism attack, be a reality for future generations of Americans who will have deal with this issue for years to come.

That’s not really a lot of CSS, and CSS is text, and it only loads once for the entire site. It’s a pretty lightweight menu, overall.
