Powell: Obama's done rather well on foreign policy

Fareed Zakaria recently sat down with former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell for a wide ranging interview that covered everything from the ongoing violence in Syria, to Mitt Romney’s Europe trip, to whether Powell plans to endorse Barack Obama again for president.

But with Obama’s speech to the Democratic Party convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, just a day away, what did Powell have to say about the president’s foreign policy? Watch the clip to find out.

We’d also like to hear readers’ thoughts on what they believe the highs and lows of the Obama administration’s foreign policy have been.

What Obama is doing in Pakistan is thousand times worse than what Bush did in Iraq? He is skipping justice system and using robot to kill lives. And yes it has been reported many innocent lives were lost because of drone strike, Assad gets to repeat history because of Obama and yes Syria is a mess because of Obama. Obama don't seem to have coherent strategy to run the world or run the country.

But Iraq wasn't involved at all. Bush didn't care. Those terrorists are involved. Get it? Hahahahahahahahaha

Obama doesn't need a coherent strategy to 'run the world'. He is not the world's president. As far as the country is concerned, Obama at least has a strategy as opposed to his Republican opponents whose pet reply is 'we will show you the strategy after the election'.

^ Nonsense. The reason for the war on Al Qaeda is that they declared war on the US, and they are hiding in Pakistan because they think we won't come after them..... wrong.

Bush war in Iraq was supposedly to find *WMD's* that did not in fact exist.

100's of thousands died as a result and 10's of thousands of US troops were killed or wounded.

So your comments that Pakistan is a 100 times worse, is the cheapest form of hyperbole. (why not 100 billion times worse) ?

Whether it's Foreign or Domestic policy, the main and urgent thing to discuss in the Media, must be our deficit. Without Money, we can't do anything.
    Money comes first.

Guess how much is the deficit we and the next American generations are facing?

I thought, $10 Trillions. But, it is $16 Trillions for now, until the full confirmation comes.

You don't want talk about it, just because it's election time?

We're currently managing to finance these obscene wars that we're in because China's financing a huge part of our current deficit!

The idiot calling himself Patrick has no idea what he is talking about. A little research and he would know he is wrong. However, it suits him to tell lies because he is an imbecile Pakistani muslim whose only reason to live is to create problems. He keeps stealing Patrick's name as if he feels it makes him sound smarter but, he is still an ignorant idiot. I have come to understand that he is totally masochistic and it irks me to help him along but he is a moron and his children will be morons.

China only holds about 9% of our debt. Give or take a percentage point. Hardly and large portion.

You confuse "deficit" with "debt." We have a debt of 16 trillion dollars. Deficit is the annual budget shortfall (amount added to the debt per year) which is about 1.1 trillion.

I agree, but still it must be balanced. Actually, I got the figure $16 Trillions from Fox and other news.

Yes, Barack Obama did succeed in killing more Muslims than one can shake a stick at! If one considers killing people a good thing, Obama was quite successful in that endeavor! This is revolting, but not to most Americans with their right-wing lynch-mob mentality!

You didn't address his point. President Obama increased the frequency of drone strikes, which has caused an increase is collateral damage (innocent civilian casualties). The United States government criticizes other governments for not recognizing the right to a trial, but then we execute from the sky with impunity.

Of course, drone strikes are preferable to ground troops in Pakistan, and we don't want to give terrorists a safe haven. Drones make less mistakes than soldiers on the ground (more time to think, don't have to worry about being shot at). The Obama administration made the decision that we have no choice but to use the drone strikes. I don't necessarily disagree with the President, but I think criticism on this issue is fair when innocent civilians are getting killed by mistake.

Between the Arab extremists calling Obama a Muslim killer (name a Muslim "leader" who hasn't killed more Muslims than *any* non Muslim – even Bin Laden killed mostly muslims!!!),

and the far right wing nuts who call him a muslim "terrorist", the two are both bat bleep crazy, and in hell you will be made to wage war against each other in the name of Jesus or Mohammad for all eternity.

The targeted killings with drones will remain a dark chapter of Obama's foreign policy. He hadn't reached out for Iran, as he tried to do so at the beginning of his term. Nevertheless he has been more honest than his predecessor, who touted for toxic democracies in the Middle East, while supporting the despots. His "leading from behind" stance on the Libyan was quite wise.

Quite right j.von hettlingen, except that Obama conquered Libya by proxy. In fact, the French could have taken out Mohammar Qaddaffy within three weeks but were too cowardly to do so. Today, France is just another useless NATO member country. The French need to be ashamed of themselves. As an American of French descent, this offends me deeply!

I am so ashamed of myself and I post the most stupid comments because I am an imbecile. Mohammed the pedophile has taught me well. When people get angry with me, I claim they are the stupid ones. Here in Germany there are still many fans of Obama, especially among young people. The official presentation of Obama in the media is mostly with a negative connotation. They don't seem to like him and I was surprised to see that many prefer the republican world-saving behaviour with throwing food-packages and offering help. Obama seems to be "not white" enough, talks much too elaborate without the magic and the worst: he tries to be honest! This is nothing, he can be blamed for, but people are looking for the holy creature, the miracle man. So let's wait, if Obama is history, we can show our admiration and praise his virtue!
I think, it was very important to offer the american view of the jews with Elly Wiesel to Germans and the II. world war from the view point of american soldiers and normal people, that he also mentioned in his book.
Europe as a whole didn't help or supported his try to stop the israeli settlements and to bring a middle-east-peace plan forward. Probably it would have been necessary from his side to express the dissapointment about this failure in europe's politics. Instead A Merkel was honnered with the liberty medal and she doesn't even know, what liberty means!
