How Muslims should respond to terror

"Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

By Fareed Zakaria

The sheer barbarism of the attack on a British soldier in Woolwich is really beyond comprehension – the alleged murderers are said to have hacked the victim to death, waited for the police to arrive, and seemed to encourage people to videotape their brutality.

And yet, we have to search for some way to think about what appears to be our future.

Terrorism used to be about something big and dramatic. But perhaps because groups like al Qaeda are on the run, their people hunted, their money tracked, their hideouts bombed, Woolwich and Boston have become the new faces of terror – a few people, disturbed or fanatical, radicalized by things they have read or watched, decide to commit evil.

How do you detect this kind of danger? It seems impossible.

This was the first terrorist killing on British soil since the London bus and subway bombings in 2005. In fact, since the Madrid and London bombings, there have been just three times that Islamic terrorists have killed people in Western Europe – Woolwich, the equally gruesome 2012 murders in France that killed French soldiers and children and a Rabbi, and the killing of U.S. soldiers in Frankfurt.

More from GPS: Here we go again

Europe's governments have been doing a good job with police and counter-terrorism work – and that might explain the relative calm of recent years. They have also done a much better job than in the past at reaching out and helping to integrate their Muslim communities. And the communities have been responding much more strongly against these isolated acts committed by murderers in the name of Islam.

The Muslim Council of Britain issued an unequivocal statement condemning the latest killing, supporting British soldiers, and urging the police to do whatever it needed to, unhindered and unhampered. That is precisely the kind of statement all leaders of Muslim communities need to make whenever one of these kinds of attacks takes place.

I understand the feeling that some have that they should not be held responsible for the actions of a few perverted madmen. But the trouble is that these madmen claim that they are killing in the name of Islam and someone has to refute their claims – as often as they make them.

Now...the alleged murderer in Woolwich claimed that he was retaliating against British soldiers killing Muslims in Afghanistan.

I wish Muslim leaders would make the point that British – and American and other allied soldiers – are in Afghanistan at the invitation of the democratically elected government of that country. They are defending that government and Muslims every day from terrorist attacks and insurgent warfare. If these people want to protest the killing of Muslims, they should direct their wrath at the Taliban and al Qaeda and other jihadi groups because they are the ones who are killing Muslims and many others.

We need to hear this message more often and more loudly.

most Americans deeply distrust all Arabs, I don't care what they say, I will forever hold this view. I think their silence speaks deeply for itself. I think if most had the chance they would be pushing the button on their suicide vests going, Oh what am I going to do to my 72 helpless females in heaven........ BOOOOOOOOM!

Your opinion is so misinformed it almost hurts. Muslims are a minority in America, they don't have some magical soapbox to express their distaste towards violence from. But if you really wanted the truth, you could simply google "muslim condemn 9/11." You'll get more than a hundred sources.

I think you've bought into the image of Muslims that your media is trying to feed you. Meet people and your opinion will become not only better informed but more intricate.

Agreed, but fyi, don't confuse Arabs with Muslims...most Arabs are Muslims, but only a small percentage of Muslims are Arabs.

As an American and a New Yorker, I have witnessed up close and personal what muslims are capable of. There are certain images of the horror of 9/11 that have been seared in my mind and are there to stay. Being told that only a small percentage of the almost 2 billion Muslims are radical extremists does not make me feel better....that's hundreds of thousands of potential terrorists trying their best to hurt us. I don't know what the solution to this nightmare is nor does anyone else. We have Muslims born and raised in America who decide to start killing us and exploding bombs in our midst. I have my family in NYC and I certainly don't want my family, neighbors, or friends hurt by some misguided Muslims. I pity the peaceful or moderate Muslims. They're hated and maligned by the rest of us for the actions of the radicals amongst them. But we don't know what else to one seems to be working on a feasible solution.

I was being racist... by using the term Arab I am covering the countries from the Middle East and the Far East and the Asiatic Coasts to the Islands in the Pacific and Atlantic to the African Continent to the shores of the USA. By saying Arab people, Most Americans envision someone with a scraggly beard and a turban on a rug. Geeez, have you not watched your bugs bunny and elmer fudd from the seventies and eighties when I grew up.....

How Muslims should respond to these terrors? The way the muslim world responded when they felt insulted with a B grade movie, and the rumors of koran burning. They responded globally, in every country whether majority or minority are muslims, they responded with passion, raided embassies, faced the riot police, even burned churches. Please, brother Muslims, don't respond by saying "those people are not muslims". It just doesn't work.

Good point. WHy don't we hear more "Im sorry" From Muslim leaders is because they really aren't sorry. People need to wise up and face the truth about these liars. Why do you think all Islamic ruled countries are involved in violent and bloody wars? Could it be simply because the religion itself is radical and condones violence, threat making and murder as the best way to relate to anyone that disagrees with their so called Prophet and his twisted beliefs?

Only they didn't, Shane. They cheered and danced and celebrated on September 11, 2001. Even in the US, they celebrated the attacks. Arabs of any faith can't be trusted, and I've never met one who didn't deserve to be punched.

Well, maybe you should distrust all Christians (I am one). After all, Timothy McVeigh called himself a Christian. Prisons are chock full of Christians. I take no responsibility for what Timothy McVeigh did or other violent Christians do. Neither should a person who happens to be Muslin take responsibility for what another person who did. Your bigotry is disgusting.

        May 25, 2013 at 10:35 pm |

All the proof is in the Koran and in all the Hadiths.
Islam is a lie, and that does not stop them from using it to kill.
Some take only what is closest in seeking something to try their hardest at doing.
All they know is the vicious hatred enshrined in the Koran. Their cultures all reflect this violence.
There is only peace to other Muslims. When they say "religion of peace", they mean "only peace towards other Muslims" and deliberately leave this out – proving them liars to our faces.
Ignorant, violent, brutal, hating females and children, unable to reject their brainwashing that envelopes their world, Muslims are the biggest threat to any peace in the world and all non-Muslims, even those brainwashed into other religions, should all band together to utterly reject Islam, Muslims, and their brutal cultures.
It is time to quarantine all Muslims from countries that do not want to be terrorized any longer.
The BEST SOLUTION to Islamic terrorism is to REJECT all Muslims, because it is from that group of brutal, brainwashed, ignorant humans that ALL of these terrorists come from. They cannot reject the lie that is burned into their brains.
Thus we must reject them and remove the immediate threat.
That IS a solution that actually will WORK EFFECTIVELY.
Either de-program these robots of insanity, or kick them out. There are no other rational options!!

Unhappy, I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy. Maybe this could be the cause of your blatant dislike of people you have never spent time with. Dearborn Michigan has one if the largest middle eastern populations in the US, and as a child of the Detroit area I remember the change of when they became visible. They are not the devil, not all practice Islam, some have excepted JESUS CHRIST as their lord and savior. Sme believe JESUS died for their sins. But the rest of them who are truly Muslim believe JESUS was sent to mankind as a sign of how powerful the creator of the universe, the sun, the moon, the stars. Yes MUSLIM HATER, Muslims who practice correctly believe in whatis good, what is righteous! Not what is evil. Many Christians do not practice correctly, nor do Muslims, and many others for that matter.

"Sorry" from the other muslims is equal to nothing. it has zero meaning because for all that we know the same parents who educated their sons and daughters in hatred for us can very well be the ones saying "we're sorry; we didn't see this coming".

The only way to show they are speaking their minds is to see them fight the extremists, protest in the streets against the hate the fundamentalists preach against us.

FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky (CNN) – Four U.S. soldiers accused of raping and killing a 14-year-old girl and slaying her sister and their parents that occurred south of Baghdad. One of the soldiers, 23-year-old Army Spec. James P. Barker, told an Army criminal investigator that after the killings he poured kerosene on the girl's bullet-ridden body, according to testimony in August at a military hearing. The girl's father, mother and five-year-old sister were also killed, according to military officials.

"Tired of the madness" – you guys mastered the way to spread the guilt over all religions; also learned very well how make us feel guilty & discourage us for complaining of not feeling safe in our country because of the spreading fundamentalist hate which now comes from inside our world/your houses. We are no longer able to fight your hate fairly because little by little you became part of our society. Please spare us the fairness preaching...

Here is a fact – the Muslim's reactions to Boston- or UK-type terrorism is impotent.

        You don't really condemn them.

was born and raised in 4th most populous country with muslim 98.5% as the majority. Over the years, the county experienced riots, car burning over entire cit, houses damaged with rocks thrown by marching angry mass over perception of injustice to the muslim religion. People would carry machetes, lit torch, rocks and systematically went through blocks of residential and commercial areas destroying lives and buildings. That were how they resolved the anger and hatred. Scary images of random and unpredictable violence by the angry mass to the innocent people are still vidid. When I saw the person killing the British soldier with the machete, the past images came haunting back of those angry mass muslims carrying machetes to kill and destroy.

Fareed, the Brits and Americans launched attacks on Afghanistan in October 2001, because the Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden, paving the way for this 12-year long war. They were not "at the invitation of the democratically elected government", because the Taliban didn't fall until December. Following this event Karzai formed a provisional government till elections were held in 2004 and he won, so he became president.

I not only distrust them vehemently, but, I loathe them. They are what they are & will remain so for another 1000 years. When I grew up I read extensively about the Holocaust, trying to understand how this could happen. My ultimate conclusion was; 'it was incomprehensible'. Since 2001 I have again read extensively trying to understand Islam & once more, in the 21st Century, it defies comprehension.

that's totally untrue in fact Muslims get hurt by these actions more than people in the western world do , see the sanctions, poverty and wars in Muslim countries. even if you looked at the personality of these people doing these horrible attacks you can easily notice that they are the bread of western vulgarity, most of them have been raised in the western world and they have psychological problems about understanding why the war during all the history of the world have been directed toward this area toward this people(arabs- muslims).

about your comment that all of them are holding the trigger of their suicide vests, that's just pure ...(American thinking)...
you see in Islam you don't treat bad with bad, but lets just revise the countries that America either investing in War now or in fact in war by it self now : Pakistan(google the amount of citizens died just in 2013 by U.S army aircrafts), Afganistan , Iraq()funding brutal government following a horrible war) , Sudan(funding militias) , Syria (U.S.A. & Russia ) funding the war in Syria , Gaza , Supporting France in its war in Mali. you see your problem is that you dont see what you are doing in the world the world now is a living hell courtesy to the U.S.A on the other hand all muslim people and government are trying to achieve peace wit h you , you get gases and petroleum almost for free even cheaper than it's prices in it's country of origin, you do wars in countries and people actually dont fight back , and when an individual acts alone you act like you cant understand why is he doing this , just let me tell you why you didn't receive a personal letter of forgiveness from the 1.5 billion Muslims in this world because either they were too busy protecting them self's from getting killed by U.S.A missile , or they just wondered why didn't you send them a letter one their whole family died or they are living as refuges in some african country because the U.S.A want to get the resources for free

Entire counties do "not" become 99.5% muslim (no caps) through love and the peaceful spreading of the word of god. Entire counties become muslim through fear. This religion is one of hate and violence toward anyone who shares different beliefs.
As the majority grows, no one dares to defect or admit conflicting beliefs. OR THEY"LL GET THEIR HEAD CUT OFF......
Mosques are the incubator and these ugly clerics are preaching hate right under our noses.
Why are the "peaceful" muslims not out parading in the streets and threatening to stop radicalism? It's because in their hearts, they really don't condemn it. Otherwise--where are they????

The problem is that large masses of the so called "moderate" Muslims like yourself try to find justification to the barbaric act of the fundamentalists Muslims. You guys on one hand express towards us a fake sorrow when an abominable terrorist act happens, on the other hand you try to justify these violent acts with distorted stories from the past.

In a civilized world you, as a religious group you stand out because YOUR HATE IS BARBARIC.!

Wow. The ignorance on this thread is through the roof...

There's no such thing as 72 virgins in Heaven -.- it's a complete and utter myth.

Secondly, to the genius who said "God is Great, Allah ain't God"
I have a little news for you. Allah, is actually the WORD for God in Arabic! :O Christians in the middle East say Allah. Jews in the Middle East say Allah. It's the Arabic word for God. That's like me saying Spanish and Espanol are two TOTALLY different things -.- it's a completely different language.

Third. About 99.9 percent of the world's Muslims are against the B.S. that they see going on in the world. No one likes a terrorist, no one likes an extremist. But there are extremists in every religion so the fact that people are still shocked? Blows my mind. The unfortunate part is a Western media which loves to single out Islam because then you people EAT. IT. UP.

Now I'm a hockey playing, moose loving, can't get enough poutine Canadian Citizen. But my love is for God. The same God Jesus was sent from. The same God Moses was sent from. The same God Abraham was sent from. The same God Moses was sent from. A God who tells us in the Quran more or less that, to kill an innocent person is like killing all of mankind.

Grow up and stop spreading hate. 90% of the fear is self instilled by U.S. citizens. wake up and smell the Shawarma.

Racism is pathetic. Speaking your mind based on stereotypes shows how immature and how little education you have. Dont put people in a "bad" group simply based on their religion. If they are threatening you, categorize the individual, not the ENTIRE population. Instead of saying the all Muslims are bad, help keep those who are in danger safe.

I happen to agree with that, but the real truth is something mostly all of us are constantly glossing over. The real peoblem is not Jihad, it is religeon itself; any religeon and all of them. This is 2013, and by now we should all have seen through the ridiculousness of nutbag fairy tales written by half-bake, self-proclaimed prophets and the such. Religeon, unfortunately, will never go away in our lifetime, but it is high time we all started looking at it for what it really is: and excuse to commit any heinous crime in the name of some sacrosanct belief that no one is allowsed to question or criticize. RIDICULOUS!

Why is Zakaria such an apologist for Muslims? At least 20,939 people have been slaughtered by MUSLIM TERROR ATTACKS SINCE 9/11. The ARAB WORLD IS SILENT. In fact, the ARAB BLOC at the U.N. has, for years BLOCKED THE POSSIBILITY OF sui-HOMICIDE ATTACKS FROM BEING DECLARED 'SA CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY." BLOWING PEOPLE UP AND REJOICING IN THEIR DEATH IS THE HALLMARK OF ISLAM. It has Far more in common with the MAFIA to me than any genuine "religion." Just imagine if in the West that Ministers, Rabbis and Priests were Sanctioned by their nation to order the Execution of Anyone deemed to be "A Threat To" their ideology. That is EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE IN ISLAMIC SHARIA. A Free Pass to order the death of ANYONE. I SEE ZERO COMPASSION OR ANY REVERE?NCE FOR LIFE WITHIN ISLAM. Yet Muslims still are waiting for the "RESPECT" from the Rest of Humanity. It will NEVER ARRIVE UNTIL THEY BECOME MORE HUMAN.

This is a sick and hateful statement. As a muslim, why do I have to answer for every action that some retard/lunatic does for whatever he claims his reason to be. This is exactly how you are letting bin laden and groups who want to take advantage of the U.S. win. THIS IS WHAT THEY WANTED AND YOU ARE GIVING IT TO THEM by alienating the muslim minority in the United states. Can you keep in perspective the number of involved vs. the number of millions that are outstanding productive U.S citizen muslims in the U.S. then factor in a percentage of lunatics who exist in every ethnicity/religion? He wanted to divide the world and you are literally making his plan successful even after his death. EVERY PERSON is responsible for his/he own action. If you don't believe that then you don't belong in this country, not me!

To "Unhappy with muslims": I am Muslim and I condemn terrorist acts by Muslims (and others of course). I did my part, let's see you do yours so we can all live together in harmony, my gut tells me that you can't, you are incapable of good feelings or deed, you love anger and violence and you search for your own crowd but guess what? You won't find it, most Americans have no problems with Muslims, in fact most New Yorkers don't have problems with Muslims including the Mayor. You are also a parrot, repeating what others post, you know nothing about Islam or about your religion in fact, I feel sorry for you, really, and I hope that some day you will wake up with a fresh view on life, today you hate Muslims, yesterday you hated someone else and tomorrow who knows, hopefully your hatred will disappear to be replaced by something constructive.

Also remember that there some Arabs who are Christians! Arabic Muslims who are the heart of Islam make up 18% only of the Muslim population. Any Muslim lives in the west has to know that he has two choices: Either to comply to the civilization or get the hell out of it! There's no third choice. on the other hand; the westerners have to defend their right to kick out those who rebel against their civilization, otherwise don't blame but themselves!

I too am angry at with Islam faith but do understand that not all are radical First I think much of this belief comes from radical religious leaders . Why do you allow radical believers to continue to minister to you.? fire them it is your church or gathering place It's time the Muslim faith help police the radicals before they become a problem . We have welcomed other faiths to come to our country so please respect us and report people who want to harm others. If you don't like us leave. no hard feelings but you are welcome if you want to become one of us. GOD is a loving GOD and would never say kill some one that doesn't believe as you.

What muslims need to do after something like this is very simple; have worldwide demonstrations against this type of behavior. They do it when videos are made of Mohammed but when someone is decapitated publicly they simply issue a
statement denouncing it. Until they do this we will always be distrustful of ALL muslims.

EVERY spot on the globe that has some major political/extremist conflict, has a strong islamic presence. coincidence? no, Just spot a world map and list out any countries having political/social/mass upheavel n violent. guarantee there is the 'peaceful' islam there. it is true across races, continents, color, even economic status.

And let me tell you most arabs, infact most Muslims deeply distrust Americans. Right or wrong. But this is a fact. Their view is very simple and hold credence. America has waged more wars on Muslims in last 50 years then any other country in the world. And American bombs have killed more Muslims as well. No Terror organization or 1 idiot who murdered the British soldier represents Muslims. Also Muslims speak against terror far more then you think. Your media doesn't show it. It is as simple. So CNN. FOX,BBC and Skynews is NOT world media. There is whole different world that exists that you are completely clueless about. So my recommendation is get out of under the rock and learn something about the world.

Please don't confuse Arabs with Muslims. Islam is a political movement. Whereas the term Arab can mean of middle eastern origin. Yes most Arabs are probably Muslims, but Islam is not a race or ethnic heritage.

@unhappy with Muslims: At a time like this when we need to be serious and offer constructive opinion, these rants that are NOT all factual don't help. First of all, all Arabs are NOT Muslim. A great majority are Christian or Coptic. So for the sake of argument, I will assume when you say Arab, you mean Muslim. Also, there is no passage in the Quran offering 72 virgins to any Muslim who dies while killing infidels....that is a twisted theory that was created by some cleric with radicalism in their notions, but sensible Muslims know this is absurd and they don't follow that ideology. I do, however, agree with your anger and frustration with the radical Islamists who are involved with terrorism for all the obvious reasons. And, more importantly, I AGREE 100% with what Mr. Zakaria has said here about the need for Muslims coming forward to denounce this evil act in the name of their religion, because it is really NOT in the name of their religion, just brainwashing by Islamic Imperialists themselves to keep control over the very thing that is making them rich....oil money and arrogance. In the name of their Islamist religion, terrorists want to increase their population, which in their fuZzy minds will be the very catalyst that helps them (Muslims) eventually take over the world so they can have more control. We know this already, but this is NOT the universal ideology of ALL Muslims, and of course all Arabs (since all Arabs are not Muslim). The more the message in this article gets out, the more we WILL hear from peace loving Muslims and they WILL denounce the horrific actions in greater volume of the few who are ruining their religion for the sake of greed, narcissism, cowardly control, etc. The media sources need to allow the articles written by the peace loving, non threatening Muslims to be published and en mass. I know there are many Muslims out there who want to put their thoughts into the press, but are often met with resistance. That needs to stop so we can quell some of the frustration in the world before more unneeded threats are cast on people who are non-threatening Muslims. The old Jim Crow laws will reappear if we don't give equal press time to all those involved in this prejudicial mess. Thank you Mr. Zakaria!

It is not merely a matter of race. It is a matter of religious belief and how the Koran is interpreted. Were Christians to interpret the Bible the way they once did, we would all be appalled at the atrocities committed by Christians. The same can be said of Hindus, Shintoists, Buddhists and any other religion you care to name. Religion has nothing to do with reason. It is a belief in things unseen and unknowable–faith. There are Muslims of every race and region and their faith is essentially the same. The trouble is that too many of them interpret as though we still live in barbaric times. By today's standards we are not barbarians. By tomorrows yet unestablished standards, who knows, but for certain now is not the time for a return to barbarism. We are equipped with weapons that could render this planet uninhabitable if some maniac got his hands on enough of them.

I am so sorry to learn your feeling. I wish the media gives chance to the Arab Muslims to express themselves and explained that people who blow themselves on the name of Islam are not Muslims. They are soldiers that were paid or brain wash to do this work so you direct your heat toward the good Muslims. Have you ever think why Muslims that lives in the USA for many years have never commit act like this one? the people you heard being captured by the FBI, are weak people that fell in trap the US government dragged them to it by sending informant that they get paid a lot of money to brain wash youth and desperate Muslim to do evil so the FBI can show they are working and we have to give up our freedom to be protect from this bad people.

The fundamental problem is that is answering the fundamentalist barbaric hate acts, we try to stay in the limits of fairness, civil rights and democracy.

And their clans who emigrated in free societies with their burkas, customs and religion, learned to hate us behind closed doors. They also learned how to complain loudly that we don't let them stay true to their culture and recreate it inside the free world.

This is a sure way towards our destruction.

If the politicians do not see that even the most pacifist of us have had enough with these nomadic barbarians, we will get rid of these weak governments.

A clever op-ed writer for the N.Y. Times suggested years ago that we could cut down the number of in-flight terror attacks by simply implementing a system where Muslims would fly naked! Just give them some temporary clothes to keep warm until they reach their destination and then they can change to their regular garb. Not a bad idea actually and it would be cheap. But then, its one more thing heaped upon the thousands of things that Muslims will complain about. Of course, if they wish to end this solution its easy–eliminate Muslim Terror attacks. In the 60's there was the phrase "Make Love Not War." Maybe Muslims should try more of that and their relentless ANGER might dissipate. Or not. Its amazing how Islam has come to virtually "own" sui-homicide bombing (there is no such thing as a Mere "suicide bomber" within the Muslim population. In fact, even worse, they feel compelled to pack sharp metal and ball bearings in their lethal bombs. And worse than that, there is NO concern for who the Victims are. In Israel, these attacks have murdered citizens from AROUND THE WORLD. In Boston, recently, I listened to a surgeon who mentioned that one of the victims, a patient of his, had some 70 sharp pieces of metal embedded in his body. That alone, in my opinion, should have warranted an Instant Death Sentence. But the Feds will probably be afraid to "get Muslims angry." Who cares, when they will be angry anyway because the culture is one of seeing "the enemy" as extrinsic to Islam rather than looking in the mirror to the horrific cult of death that Islam has unleashed on our world in over 20 nations around the globe. I am not being politically correct here. Only an idiot would think that the status quo is o.k. It is not. There IS a war that Muslims have been fighting against the West for decades and it would take more than a massive Re-Writing of the Koran to change this...The ideology is too ingrained within this extraordinarily REPRESSIVE theo-political ideology, rife with threats of Death and Intimidation to keep Muslims essentially severed from any right to freely voice their Individual Conscience. THE CULT IS DEVOTED TO THE SPREAD OF THE IDEOLOGY, rather than concern for the effects of it in my opinion.

I guess Muslims are the only ones with a violent history. Not America, ya'll have no violent history. America only spreads love and peace. When they first set their foot on this land they were compassionate and loving. They didn't steal the lands from the Indians they bought them from them. They never enslaved people just because their skin color. The blacks volunteered to work in the cotton fields. And the only time America goes to war is only to help out those in need. Like in Iraq they didn't go there to steal any oil. Iraq had weapons of mass destruction they're just still hid somewhere. We should all be like America and it's people.

The U.S. and Britain have been killing innocents since they first invaded Iraq. Or are those necessary casualties? Would it be fair for me to blame all Americans or British people for those killings? Or blame ya'll for the enslavement of African Americans. Or blame Americans for the killings of the American Indians. And please when you talk about violence in the Quran go read your precious Bible. It's been proven that the Bible is far more violent than the Quran. So stop you bigots and look at yourselves before judging others.

Inmho, Zak article is too simplistic and lays all blame on Muslims. Yes Muslim are killing each other, yes there is internal conflict but there Really many external forces including us/British supporting different groups covertly and at times overtly to settle scores, to control vast channels of trade, and political clout, etc. Drones, targeted killing, instigation at the hand of foreign forces are fuelling these, and these will not stop unless and until foreign forces get out and stop killing Muslims. Muslims do not have to apologize, because it is not Muslims did these acts, it is person or a group of person affected did, people in many Muslims countries are terrorized by foreign influences through targeted killing, drones, this will only increase and not decrease, Mali, somaliland, ethiopia are under constant attck from us, french, British, and other European what can they do, they cannot wage wars like this is the route they have to settle scores. Flouik, I hope one day that Muslims and all other religions will be as brothers. Only then will so much pain and suffering will be eliminated.

But I also wonder, in all this discourse, about why the world only seems to hear from the radical Islamic clerics and supposed spokespeople of the Islamic faith. Those are the people who are taking Islam and bring shame on all those Muslims who DO value its teachings. Where are these voices of reason, these voices of discourse, these voices of compassion of all the of all the imams and other learned Islamic men of letters? The world NEEDS to hear from them too. Otherwise we will continue to only hear, and form our opinions on, the minority "squeaky wheels" of the worldwide Islamic community that we have to listen to currently.

If the real Islamic community doesn't speak up and show us their true selves, we as a world will continue to have trouble placing our trust in you.

Sorry, but religious differences, especially amongst the Abrahamic religions have never fostered "brotherhood". Judaism is a take from Sumerian folklore, Christianity expands upon it, Islam re-writes it all...

With all this, and all three claiming to be the one true religion, how on Earth can you expect a meeting of the minds and mutual respect? it's never going to happen...

No, Religion is NOT the Greatest Divider- the divider is hate. Stop making everyone of us ashamed if we belong to a religion.
The problem is only with religions which proselytize killing other members of religions just because for having a different way of life. We should've get alarmed years ago when we realized that they kill their daughters/sisters just for adopting the lifestyle of the Western society where they live now. If this religion does this to their loved ones for religion reasons, what should we expect?

If all good and law abiding Muslims spoke like you, all of the world would support them. Muslims need to be heard attacking terrorism of radical, Political, fundamentalist Islam, whether it comes from an Ayatollah, a cleric, an imam, a class or a book. There is too much emotion and over reaction within some segments of population, particularly Arab Muslims. Many are taught through Islamic leaders or parents, one way, and there is no free thought allowed in order to understand others within some families. Muslim youth are the leader of change~ to accept everyone in the world and do not consider Islam to be superior to others, but simply one of your own personal choice. But infidel and apostate are negative terms, and when they are used it shows that you think you are superior to non Muslims.

There are many good Muslims, especially in America. Do not judge people by their country, their religion, for we all have good or bad and those who think differently are truly biased and hate filled people. Everyone is an individual. To all Muslims and non Muslims...the problem is with fundamentalist, political Islamists who want to impose Sharia law on Muslims, and some of them go as far as to wanting to see it for the world. What the world is seeking from good Muslims is to fight against these extremists, it is THEY who try to divide us and create and hatred. And some Muslims blindly follow them because they have so much blind faith and were never allowed to think outside of what theyd been told.

Americans, the answer is not spewing hatred back at them, it is aligning ourselves with the good Muslims, for if they feel our support then they will have more strength to speak up for themselves against Islamic extremists and fundamentalist groups who use every protest, election and each fight with the west as a rallying point to move in and recruit people to die for them(for THEM, but they tell them its for Allah, a complete lie that no creator would approve of). So when you attack Muslims, please be sure to say we are supportive of good law abiding Muslims but not radical, fundamentalist, political Islamists. because then you wont offend the good Muslims who are the best weapon against the evil extremists. Make that differentiation so we dont act like we are in attack mode on all of them, which only will cause all Muslims to go on the defensive. Some of them are amongst some of our most kindest, contributors to society. I wouldnt want to be judged by something bad even a family member did. so imagine how they feel when you use the general term Muslim. Islamists have a world goal for a Caliphate.

Dont speak without looking up your facts, and judge people as individuals, thats my opinion. We all have room for self improvement and to make our country a better place for all. reach out to good Muslims, they are the majority. That will help them to feel acceptance, not targeted, and acceptance is their empowerment to stand with us against those fundamentalist, political Islamics who are hurting Muslims even more then they hurt non Muslims. Majority of the people in the world are good people. Its time that all of us work together for a better world.

Turks and Israelis seem to be doing pretty well, so not everyplace in the Middle East is a war zone. In fact, Turkey is the grand example for what a predominantly Muslim nation could be. The problem isn't Islam. The problem with the middle-east is the Arabs. They're just genetically broken.

One must keep in mind that if there is wealth to be gained, the Ethnocentric Europeans will find a way to discover and fight to take the resources of other people and their lands. Americans are no different we just code it as U.S. vital Interests, which is another way of saying were going to take over and control your resources. Open your minds eye and you will see the light.

Oh my, I can say that I've read some very stupid comments in my time on the internet but these are the stupidest I've ever seen. Any person who's done light research on the Islamic faith would know these simple facts:
      a. Islam is split into two groups
      1. Shiite (shia) - Extremists, resort to violence, such as the suicide bombers seen on the news, we hear
about this section the most, they believe that the leader of Islam should come from Muhammad's blood
line. This population is less then 15% of Islam
      2. Sunni - peaceful, they believe in submitting to God hence the word "muslim" which mean "one who submits"
85% of the religion is the Sunn

Do the math and use those lumps of tissue you all have in your skulls.

      Good Day.

      2) moderate muslims do not have the weaponary to fight extermists

UJ – Your problem and the problem with Islam is the same. Interpretation is the issue. I ask you who is "innocent". The men that killed the soldier believed that they were following the Koran and serving Islam by killing someone they deemed to be NOT INNOCENT.

Do you understand? Islam is open ended. All Warlords throughout history used perception to create the illusion that if you fought for them you were fighting for God or Gods. Mohammed is no different he needed his followers to kill and the only way to do that would be to convince them that the enemy was not innocent but deserved death because they were outside of Islam.

        It continues to this day.

the Prophet Muhammad would have responded by first having an official army in place or having a country which recognized him as the head of state. once he had a clear and open and internationally presentable nation and army that officially represents islam on the world stage, he would then deal with the issue either himself or at the united nations.

That was the way of the Prophet. To offer terms of peace, before going to war in a formal manner. As a mature, responsible, and upright adult. With law and order and peace in the lands as the ultimate objective.

The Prophet was someone who always thought of the weak and the poor in society. Constant war ultimately has the harshest effect on the poor and the weak in society. They suffer the most.

A few things, the US INVADED Afghanistan. INVADED. The only reason it is there is because the US installed people to support it's military presence. Initially it wasn't asked to come into Afghanistan. Second, you can't call individuals fighting off a US invasion, insurgents. They are merely DEFENDERS, whether or not you agree with them. You should write an article about how Muslims should respond to terror attacks committed by the US via drone strikes, invasion, brutality. The author of this article is a moron. Seriously what a joke.

Tony, you're the moron. The US, as you say, INVADED Afghanistan because Afghanistan was directly supporting attacks on American civilians. They gave safe haven to those responsible. They refused to give them up. They started it.

Tony, somebody needs to investigate you for terrorist ties. Your sympathetic views are a red flag. I wouldn't be surprised if you're a fundamentalist muslim and terrorist in the making.

It's simple, what should Modern-thinking peaceful Muslims do? They need to show that they are truly peaceful and accept others by turning in those that they know are radicals. They need to clean up their own mess.
Understand this, that if they weren't fighting the great satan, they would be busy killing each other, as they have done for a thousand years..
Turn in those that are radicals.. it's simple

It seems to me that Muslim organizations condemn these terrorist acts but never the perpetrators. Clerics need to make it clear that these murderers are not destined for paradise but instead a severe fate for their actions.

We also have to stand up and decry violent acts. Violent acts are perpetrated by every race, colour creed not just the Muslims. We have to focus on hate crimes not on race. We also have to accept that violent acts are being perpetrated by Americans, Canadians and British people as well. Talk to people in other Countries about the violence of Americans. As a Canadian that has travelled I have heard about the atrocities committed by American people. The Muslims are the new target for hatred to be directed at. Are they perfect – No – but nobody deserves to die violently for any reason. Most Muslims I am sure are like us. They want to live in peace and raise their families. Much of this unrest is being fueled by those that benefit from war. War unfortunately is big business. We have to start looking at this as well. Violence and hatred are complex subjects but the majority of people on planet Earth are decent and caring. We have to remember this.

A western way of life can't coexist peacefully with the fundamentalist one because the first is an offense to the last.

We kept speaking the democracy language with the Muslim immigrants, just to discover that we will be always on the loosing side. Regardless of what they say when they are in society, behind closed doors they raise their children to become Boston-bombers.

As long as there are no actual protests, inside their religion, from the moderates against the fundamentalists, this religion will keep breeding bomber and haters.

Stop trying to spread hatred and lies...Islam does not allow killing of innocent human beings...there are 1.7 billion muslims in this world, if the Quran told them to kills non muslims, the world would be a different place right now...and stop trying to use the logic that these idiots used the name of Islam when killing someone...If someone who claims to be a vegetarian goes out and eats 1000 steaks, you suddenly don't start to believe that vegetarians eat steaks, you simply say that that person is not a vegetarian period! there is no such thing as a moderate or extremist muslim...either you are a muslim or you are not...Islam does not allow killing of innocents...if someone claiming to be muslim says that it does, is not a muslim to begin with...use your common sense and stop spreading hatred and lies about the Prophet and Islam!

      – Muslims kill 100,000s in the name of their religion.
      – Non-Muslims kill 10,000,000s in the name of greed, nationalism, racism.

      which is better?
to kill less in the name of religion or to kill more in the name of something else.

The Muslin community should be holding the radicals in their religion accountable and should be working towards ending this extremism .Until they are willing to do this ,they should not complain when others refer to them as terrorists.

That's like saying all Black preachers have to do is go to Chicago, recite some Bible verses to the disgruntled Black masses there and all the Black-on-Black crime will stop.
