Dennis Blair: Administration has done a bad job of explaining NSA program
Fareed speaks with President Obama's first director of National Intelligence, now retired Naval Admiral Dennis Blair, about the NSA surveillance program. Watch the full interview at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.
Do you understand the kind of anger that this has generated around the world and in the United States, because there's a sense that the NSA – and it is really about the NSA – has this technological capacity to look into almost anything, anyone's phone calls, anyone's emails. And the response of the intelligence community seems to be, well, trust us. We're not going to do anything really silly with this.
I do believe, and I tried when I was Director of National Intelligence, to talk more openly about this program. I think we can do that without talking about specific details, which are what have to be kept secret. And I think that this administration has done a bad job of explaining it. And had we done it from an early stage, from the time that I was DNI on, then these revelations would have been less shocking.
I think a couple of things are worth mentioning, though. The scale of these programs is large because the scale of communications is large. And there are billions of phone calls, emails, tweets and other forms of communication being made all over the world.
So in order to try to find ones that are being made by those hostile to the United States, it will require big programs, large computers, lots of data. So that simply is a question of scale, not a question of principle.

Do you deny, Dennis, that the NSA is putting the content of domestic phone calls into a buffer that can be accessed at a later time with warrants? And do you deny that metadata is a tool used to get those warrants? Do you deny that the NSA has turned over material to the DEA and encouraged them to lie to the courts about the source? Do you deny that the NSA went after the president of Qwest when he refused to turn over his customer's data?
NSA is the National Security Agency and no spy agency (as many reported). We need a better security and protection for Americans, as we know that foreign enemy spies (i.e. the most dangerous are: j a p a n e s e, koreans, chinese, ...) have secret undercover operations in USA. We cannot and should not tolerate foreign spies (and they have the necessary technology). We need and want better security in America.
I agree that the countries you name are a threat to our intellectual property. They are idea suckers. I have had personal experience regarding theft of our ITAR restricted University research data by foreign nationals. They come here as students many times and act innocent when they snoop around in our labs and our computers on a network. We pride ourselves on our ability to come up with new ideas and technology. These other countries may have intelligent people, but intelligence alone does not bring creativity and imagination.
It's government snooping is nothing new. It's just the scale that had shocked the world. Nevertheless, from Roman emperors to American presidents, they all seemed to know that, one was only able to defeat one's enemy by understanding the enemy first. The Chinese general and tactician Sun Tzu (544-496 BC) during the Zhou dynasty wrote his famous treatise The Art of War. Nelson Mandela had also read this book. Spying has tradition and knows no limits! It only fears bad intelligence.
We are either a transparent society or not. It really comes down to leadership. This is not only an administration issue but an underlying political direction in America today. We will see in the near future whether the direction for all of us is a tendency which will keep the country headed toward a future. In my opinion for to long the short term goals of government over the last sixty years have been leading the country in the wrong direction. We have let the influence of the lobbist to lead us rather than a wisdom of providing for the common welfare through an ideal of protecting the individual and providing opportunity to the individual. A welfare state as well as a corporate welfare state cannot survive as it does not follow natural law. It is left to a political system to lead the way in a democracy and unfortunately in this modern paradigm it can be influenced toward inaction, inefficiency and dogmatic decisions. It is unfortunate to see such potential flounder when for some two hundred years very little hope has been offered to a struggling world other than the guidance coming from a declaration of independence. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness takes a most serious mind and leadership which requires an integrity missing from the world today. We are mired in the muck of trivia and an undeclared via for power.

Nannygate" is a popular term for the 1993 revelations that caused two of President Bill Clinton's choices for United States Attorney General to become derailed.
In January 1993, Clinton's nomination of corporate lawyer Zoë Baird for the position came under attack after it became known that she and her husband had broken the law by employing two illegal aliens from Peru as a nanny and chauffeur for their young child. They had also failed to pay Social Security taxes for the workers until shortly before the disclosures. While the Clinton administration thought the matter was relatively unimportant, the news elicited a firestorm of public opinion, most of it against Baird. Within eight days, her nomination lost political support in the U.S. Congress and was withdrawn.

For Dennis Blair to say that no one has list their job because of the NSA spying is an out right lie. The President of Brazil recently revealed that as a result of the NSA spying on her she is not going to go forward with a $4.5 billion dollar F/A-18 Super Hornet airplane program that is built in St. Louis. Many people have and will continue to loose their jobs as a result of the NSA spying going too far.
Furthermore, the argument of whether or not spying should be allowed because of no obvious job loss or obvious harm to an American is ludicrous. Whether or not the NSA can spy on Americans should not even be a question. There is a presumption of privacy built into out culture, our laws and way of life. The NSA's actions are doing more harm to the USA than any terrorist actions could ever do because it has eroded our culture of freedom and free speech. Now we live under the fear of the NSA.
Farreed, I don't if you will read this but I hope you do. In your interview with Admiral Blair he says "he doesn't know one person that has been affected by these programs", well I am one of those causalities. I have lost jobs, I have been harassed, I have had been subject to humiliation, civil rights violations and other tactics of the counterintelligence programs of the US Army, DOJ, and DHS. I have subject to FISA warrant probing. I have sent several FOIA's, only to be stonewalled. I was a 17 year commissioned officer in the US Army, to be involuntary discharged for unknown reasons. I am a born US citizen, veteran and patriot. There are others out there that have suffered from these programs, but are either scared or unaware of these activities.

Unfortunately the show started out with a so called, panel of experts that instead more resembled an anti Obama ultra-Right Wing Faux news propaganda diatribe. Their one sided talking points (accusations) were that President Obama was failing because… Health Care Reform is a mess, we are failing in Syria, we cannot trust Iran, the NSA has embarrassed us overseas and Saudi Arabia does not trust us. Let’s translate this from Republican drivel speak into facts.
Health Care Reform was / is desperately needed but is opposed by the billionaire Corporate CEO’s of the Health Care Industry who manipulate Right Wing politics and Media. Right Wing crazies would drag us into the Syrian debacle against the wishes of ninety eight percent of the American People. Right Wing war mongers are itching for a ruinous disastrous war with Iran against the wishes of ninety nine percent of the American People. Saudi Arabia is ruled by Islamic extremist dictators who hate our guts and they are mad at us because they have not been able to manipulate President Obama’s policies. Yes the NSA has caused some problems due to operations that were put in place under Bush / Cheney. The reason Rock Obama was elected and re elected easily is that the Republican alternative was and is unthinkable.

It appears that a lot of people are paranoid after the 9/11 attacks. The NSA, FBI and CIA surveillance of its citizens, and others, is vast and pervasive. Yet the brothers Tsarnaev -the Boston Marathon bombers- had cell phones and used the internet prodigiously, leaving an incriminating footprint in the electronic ether. Even with the Russians pointing a neon-bright finger at the golden-glove boxer, was to no avail.Is it any wonder why NSA director, Gen. Keith Alexander appeared not to have uttered a word about the Tsarnaves during his testimony on Capitol Hill? It appears that these so- called intelligence services are only effective as the people who populate them.

If they hadn't stopped the guy assembling explosives a few miles from my NYC apartment, we'd be saying that NSA missed the terrorists in New York and Boston.

Under the guise of security the Nazi state tried those which put their own safety at risk by pointing out the policies and actions of their government. When it comes to the truth we must make a commitment. The state always has used it's security as an excuse to attack liberty. This is almost an absolute in a journey toward fascism. We must recognize and understand to give away our freedom is to give away our individual spirit. Those who want the state to own our lives do not understand the long term result of giving up on the central idea of liberty. Through the pursuit of power human beings again and again have given up their liberty to the states need for security. We extend our power using might rather than wisdom and greed over any long term pursuit of the ideals of true liberty. These take the applications of making our problems and solutions open to discussion. Not in the present world where policies are decided behind closed doors for the common good when we all know it is not about safety but a will and means to monitor their population.
