Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN
On GPS this Sunday: The latest developments from Ukraine – and Fareed’s take on what the events there this week might mean.
Next, the New Yorker Editor David Remnick, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Robin Wright, author of Rock the Kasbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World, offer their take on Russian geostrategy, what’s behind the unrest in Ukraine, and what to look out for in talks with Iran.
Also, are Spaniards getting enough sleep? And would turning the country’s clocks back an hour boost GDP? We’ll take a closer look in our What in the World segment.
If the West wants Russia's cooperation, which would certainly be required to assist Ukraine to resolve its crisis, it would need to be more sensitive to history. Sending the Foreign Ministers of Poland, France and Germany did not send the right message to Moscow, and parts of Ukraine. Poland, France and Germany have been the big invadors of Russia, after Genghis Khan. Poland in the early 17th century (during the "Times of Trouble"); then, Napoleon and Hitler. I am not suggesting that present day Poland, France and Germany have any connection with that past, but some historic sensitivity is helpful. So, if I were in Brussels, I would send the Dutch and Danish Foreign Ministers (or some other country which is perceived to be neutral) to represent the EU.
Good posting, Stratos. At least you know your history unlike many of these other ignoramuses here who just vomit out their right-wing manure over how Ukraine must join the EU and snub Russia!
How wonderful that America is going to invade Ukraine, and start talking turkey with Russia, the only large country that can ever rival India. As the world's greatest democracy and its only super duper power, India should join the US in this invasion, for this is the only chance that the invasion can ever succeed.
On the one hand, the US has plenty of experience of invading other countries, with the skills honed in the invasion of Panama, Greennada, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, that India lacks. On the other, India has resources and ways and means to manage large dalit populations. We can send 100 million of our dalit armies, that completely overwhelm all the population in Ukraine. We can make all the Ukraine girls to be married to our dalit soldiers, that will instantly solve our problem of too few girls, and at the same time all the next generation of them will be our content India dalits instead of Russians who are constantly a pain on America's butt. As for the rest of the Ukrain men, they will either all be vaporized in their unholy and futile so called resistance, or that they can all migrate to Russia to co-habit with their fellow Slaves.
This will completely change the geostrategic situation, it will make India the strongest nation in the world, and enhancing our world's greatest and largest and duperest super power status. And in fact, that should turn it around immediately to make the USA our vassal state because of our immediate control of Ukrain oil and gas and our chokehold on the Russian land mass.
Submit to your fate under our Hindu Colossus, beg our 5 rupee meal middle classes, bow to our super powers.
Pray for India. Jai Hind!
Can anyone explain Putin's timing? An invasion right before the G8 summit seems reckless but Putin must have a strategic reason.
Dear Mr Zakaria, i am watching your program today and I can't wait to see your opinion on Venezuela' s issues. Please bring attention to the big picture of this dangerous issue, how it will affect democracy in South America, implications in USA. i wonder if you are aware Leopoldo Lopez a young family man and exemplary citizen that was capture by President Maduro's instructions while he was marching peacefully and whose life can be taken any time for the only reason that is promoting democracy in his country. Thanks again
I'm currently watching your program and have to say I agree strongly with Mr. Remnick's view on Russia and Vladimir Putin. I want to add that I see as Putin's weakness is his pride. Also his need to make Russia what he believes it used to be. That can only be done through reforms of the economy and society but he would rather take a shortcut through dictatorship. If you want to fight Putin the best way is through his pride so for example he spent $50 billion on the Olympics. I say give him another 10 Olympics , World Cup, European cup, world expo, every kind of international gathering so that he can bankrupt himself in the name of pride. Let him ruin himself.
Mr. Zakaria, your program is the ONLY news hour worth watching in its entirety......
Farid often calls for structural reform. What does structural reform mean?
Feb 23. How can anybody who is informed suggest that that 'blacks are less well off now than they were under apartheid' as stated by
Robin Wright with no explanation. Excruitiatingly embarassing for Fareed
Did I just hear Robin Wright say that blacks in South Africa are worse off now than under apartheid? I seriously hope she misspoke and does not actually believe that inaccurate statement. If she truly believes her statement was factual, on what basis is she making her claims? I continue to urge GPS to have experts on the show who can speak authoritatively, and accurately, on issues concerning Africa–a vast, complex, and diverse continent.
Speaking of what next in Ukraine, regarding this article on cnn, http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/21/opinion/dougherty-putin-headache-ukraine/, by Jill Dougherty speaking about Putin and who is in control of all of this. The article is very good at explaining the how Yanukovich is really playing the biggest part in all of this. I would only add that instead of explaining the situation as clever thought out plan by one or two people manipulation world powers I think first one cannot overestimate the power of human greed, ignorance, thirst for power (Yanukovich ), pride and misplaced nationalism (Putin) and compassion combined with good intentions (EU, west) to create a situation which ends up to make a disaster. Additionally do not underestimate the ability of the opposition to fail to come together and provide a plan which satisfies most Ukranians fast enough.
We are at the end of act 1 of a multiple act of a Shakespearean drama. The next part depends on the opposition coming up with a way forward for Ukraine, aka paying back its loans. Unless the EU and US step in with a cash infusion , I worry there will be another set of protests. Then that will open a door for opposition and an opening for Yanukovich. He will appeal to the Eastern Ukainian/Russians for help. He has enough money and friends to make trouble.
By appealing to the Russian part, be will by default be appealing for Russia to help. Of course the Russian people and Putin will have to help their Russian compatriots and get involved.
The only way to avoid this is to arrest Yanukovich but there is a danger in this as well. By arresting him, Ukraine will be flipping the positions of Yanukovich and Tymashenko and thus possibly making him a martyr and a lighting rod for the eastern Ukranians and Russians.
A better solution would be to send Yanukovich and his money to another country, not Russia, but somewhere in South America so as not to make him martyr. If he stays in Ukraine , Russia or even Belorussia he will continue to cause problems.
Strangely enough, Hollywood has recently demonstrated the importance of art history with the movie The Monuments Men. But there is nothing wrong with President Obama pointing out that not all students need to go for a four year college degree, which is ridiculously costly these days, and often still leaves the students with unmarketable skills. The university establishments may get their feathers ruffled by his comment, but if they were honest, they'd admit that there are relatively few well paying positions for newly graduated art historians.
I liked the Art History interview today. I think Adam is right about Art History and connecting to history. Consider the term "Jedi" from star wars. Sounds like: jet-eye. There is a condition in the world of ophthalmology called Keratoconus. There is a degen of the cornea that makes the eye kinda pointy. I have the condition. Not sure if that makes me a Jedi.
Furthermore, consider the nozzle of a jet engine.
