What do you think Pakistan's role will be once we start pulling out? They're going to try to fill that vacuum, probably.
I think it's already clear that they're determined to see a resurgence of the Taliban. They're supporting them. They're encouraging them. There's been a spate of attacks. Just now, I was just in Kabul two days ago. We had a suicide bombing almost every day that I was there in the last week. And that's all coming from Pakistan. The madrassas have closed, you know, and they're all going in.
And that's clearly what needs to be looked at very strongly, because the Pakistanis have not finished their war. And what they want is, through a proxy force, to dominate affairs in Afghanistan. And they're still going to continue...
And that proxy force is the Taliban, for the Pakistanis?
The Taliban, yes, and actually al Qaeda has shown there they were protecting and hiding bin Laden. And al-Zawahiri, who's taken over from bin Laden, is head of al Qaeda, he's in Pakistan. And I have a passage in the book which shows that they certainly, in 2005, they were hiding him, the Pakistani government.

At this point police registered a case against the entire family note "registered" a case against the family and "no one was ever arrested"!! the baby was not singled out so to speak..
Of course Pakistan is hiding Zawahiri, just like they were hiding Bin Laden. Pakistan is home to Al Qaeda, so where else would the Al Qaeda leaders hide? Muslim terrorists are always treated like celebrities and heroes in Pakistan.

I wished it was that easy as sending a hellfire missile! Why do you think President Karzay is not signing the agreement with us? His biggest beef with president Obama has been exactly the findings of Carlotta Gall. Pakistan has always been and still is the main funding source behind Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden (may he burn in hell). 99% of suicide bombers including the recent attacks on Kabul hotel are all orchestrated by ISI (Pakistani Intelligence). So Karzai demanded that Obama faces Pakistan and deal with the real issue and only then he will sign the security agreement with U.S. but we know that isn't going to happen as US deems Pakistan as necessary evil. Until and unless we stop Pakistan, the problems in Afghanistan and perhaps the world will not go away.

My dear brother(how else can I address you if you don't have a name!) what CNN could do was to be a loudspeaker neither for America nor for Pakistan but a LOUDSPEAKER for truth and peace. But unfortunately that is not what CNN is for. If Zakaria were a smart guy he could at least have asked a few tough question about the evidence and sources of writers claims. But he seams to be coluding with her instead and giving words to her mouth. And did you not see the body language of the writer herself? She dose not seem confident at all when she lays those allegations. And how can she be absolutely sure regarding Alzawahiri's presence in Pakistan unless she personally saw him there. These, and a lot more other questions should have been asked because the implications and consequences of what she is claiming, and asking the American authorities for as a reaction, are dire for both countries. And mind you the authorities who run the afairs of Pakistan including the affairs of its atomic programm are not idiots. They are the same people who helped America and the West in defeating the 2nd supper power that was USSR and thus winning the Cold War for them. As regards the case of 1000 CIA informants providing intelligence, there were more than thousand in Iraq, and the kind of intelligence they were providing and consequently what happened there everybody knows at this stage, and I am sure you are also aware of that. Finding Osama from Abbottabad I am not so sure as I have not aware of any evidence so far revealed to the public. If you are aware of any evidence please enlighten me. If you remember there were claims made after 9/11 attacks that they found a Highjacker's passport in the rubble of twin towers. So they have habit of finding odd things at odd places! And I am sure they will find Alzawahiri in Pakistan as "where there is a will there is a way".

Police officers have for long been scorned by the society, viewed as part of an inefficient, ineffective and corrupt system. Some police officers have also been known to aid warring gangs in major metropolitan cities like Karachi and do more harm than good. It is not the most lucrative job to assume either. Police officers earn meager salaries but are expected to honestly perform their duties without accepting any bribes or adopting other unfair means of income. However, recent killings and acts of violence have swung public sympathies in favor of the police force. Pakistan’s policemen battling terrorism are faced with an unprecedented threat. Largely untrained in counterterrorism operations, Pakistan police is up against Taleban and other local militant groups.
The enemy is determined and often resorts to suicide missions to cause civilian deaths, spread panic or expose claims by security agencies of ensuring foolproof security arrangements. While no region remains safe for the police officers on duty, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province remains the most dangerous. Last year, more than 24 policemen in the province lost their lives in line of duty. Recently, local militants scored a major victory by assassinating Pakistan’s chief of counterterrorism operations in Karachi. The death of Chaudhry Aslam, one of Pakistan’s most decorated officers, has sown fear among ordinary citizens who are concerned about the hapless response by police after such violent attacks. The martyred officer had played a lead role in foiling several terror attacks and nabbed key members of terrorist networks in Karachi. While the government continues to applaud police for thwarting terrorist attacks across the country, it needs to make a sincere effort in ensuring that sacrifices of these brave men do not go in vain. The authorities must chalk out an anti-terrorism strategy and take a firm stance on whether peace negotiations will be pursued with the militants. A well-defined national security policy must clearly state the role to be played by police and then equip them with the necessary skills and resources to diligently perform their duties. To be fair, the police should only be responsible for supporting the military in counterinsurgency operations. The main responsibility of police lies in protecting civilian lives and property by maintaining law and order in the country.
The government also needs to strongly follow up on the cases of slain policemen by bringing the militants and criminals to justice. A weak response by the government has dampened morale of the police force, which often finds itself ill-equipped or heavily outnumbered in the face of threats. A demoralized police force would lack the will to put its life in danger to protect ordinary citizens. Political intervention in the working of police department is known to have hampered its performance. By removing the political clout and recruiting honest officers, the government can improve law and order situation in the country. It would also help in abolishing certain “no-go areas” within large metropolitan cities and restore the confidence of civilians in security agencies of Pakistan.
I cannot disagree with a single word that you said above. But the story of our bleak and pathetic situation is long and more complex and convoluted than apparently seems. It is the story of betrayal by our so called leaders – military and civilian – and external forced who appointed and supported those leaders to advance their geopolitical agenda. But you are right, ultimately we are responsible as nation whatever ills we suffer from. But believe me as a nation we have no love for any terrorist organisation or its activities, and as you rightly pointed out we are ourselves victims of terrorism, internal as well as external.

Masud, have you watched "The hunt for Bin Laden"? It is a superb show, done by PBS. I learned a lot from that awesome program. Bin Laden was identified by a Pakistani and located in Abbottabad. This was reported to the CIA, who then video taped his compound for months, before the US sent stealth helicopters in, that finally killed him. It is just a matter of time before Zawahiri meets the same fate. Maybe his compound id being video taped at this very moment....... 🙂
