Analyst: Pakistan knows where al-Zawahiri is

Fareed speaks with Carlotta Gall, ‘New York Times’ reporter and author of ‘The Wrong Enemy:  America in Afghanistan, 2001-2014’, about the future of Afghanistan.Watch the full interview this Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

What do you think Pakistan's role will be once we start pulling out? They're going to try to fill that vacuum, probably.

I think it's already clear that they're determined to see a resurgence of the Taliban. They're supporting them. They're encouraging them.  There's been a spate of attacks. Just now, I was just in Kabul two days ago. We had a suicide bombing almost every day that I was there in the last week. And that's all coming from Pakistan.  The madrassas have closed, you know, and they're all going in.

And that's clearly what needs to be looked at very strongly, because the Pakistanis have not finished their war. And what they want is, through a proxy force, to dominate affairs in Afghanistan.  And they're still going to continue...

And that proxy force is the Taliban, for the Pakistanis?

The Taliban, yes, and actually al Qaeda has shown there they were protecting and hiding bin Laden. And al-Zawahiri, who's taken over from bin Laden, is head of al Qaeda, he's in Pakistan. And I have a passage in the book which shows that they certainly, in 2005, they were hiding him, the Pakistani government.

Do you think the Pakistani government knows where Zawahiri, the head of al Qaeda, is?

Yes. Absolutely.

I doubt very much that the Pakistanis know where Ayman al Zawahiri is. For the gigantic price that this government put on his head, the Pakistanis would turn him in on a moment's notice so he can be murdered by the same clowns who murdered the purported Ussama bin Laden back on May 2, 2011. The thugs that murdered this man's family need to be apprehended and tried for this crime but won't, sadly enough.

What? Pakistan does not know where Zawahiri is? That's like claiming that the Vatican does not know where the Pope is.

Those who really run Pakistan, know where Ayman al-Zawahiri is. They are the topshots of the ISI. It's unclear, whether Nawaz Sharif knows about al-Zawahiri's whereabouts. I wouldn't doubt at all, if Asif Ari Zardari knew nothing about Osama bin Laden hidding in Abbottabad, before he was killed in 2011.

Why would Pak ISI hand him over for that pittance of a reward if you can get billions in aid that can be siphoned off easily? Not to mention, the addnl leverage in the relationship Pak ISI has with top AQ still on the run.

    • Get over it, already!

Joseph McCarthy, your real name is obviously Mohammed Akbar Siddiqui or some such thing. I have been reading your comments for over 6 months now. Get over it, already!!!!!!!!!!!! Your strongly biased "I love Islam and hate the Western World" comments, are so sick, they can only be flushed down the toilet. All of us Americans feel sorry for you. You obviously live in America, you enjoy the "good life" the West has to offer you, but you "rant and complain" about how unfairly your Muslims are being treated. What a joke!!!! Go live in Pakistan, for crying out loud, or Saudi Arabia.......... where you can chant "Allah O Akbar" 5 times a day............ and put a hijab over your wife's face...............

Wow Joseph, you must think that the world is naive and will listen to your every word. Sorry fella, the world has quite a few more intelligence upon what is true and what isn't. Your lies are quite laughable! How can you live with yourself knowing that Allah is going to strike you down when the time comes for being an infidel?

Yep, it sure presents one messed up situation. But who knows, if Crimea has made the Soviets feel any bit lucky then maybe they'll gear up and give it another go with the Taliban. Againistan anyone?

@ Joseph, i think you might be forgetting how long Pakistan kept Bin Laden hidden in their country while the whole time they were recieving billions from the US! I fail to see any difference in this situation at all. Once a snake, always a snake.

@chrissy. Speaking of snakes, did you see I stole yet another name?

And I use my real name so little I forgot how to spell it. So much easier to steal names that aren't even used anymore.

@chrissy. I agree. And 25% of those billions were spent on pepperoni pizza.

I believe that the US knows where Al Zawhiri is. This article states that Pakistan is causing suicide attacks on Afghanistan.. but without any proof. Only lies and bias lies.

Stop giving aid to these Islamic people who harbor all kinds of Muslim terrorists. Can't trust them.

  15. Religious Freedom

We can not trust, neither Chinese nor Koreans. Arabs are not that bad, and in religious freedom, it does not matter that they are muslims – and they have oil – lot´s oil.

    April 7, 2014 at 12:21 pm |
    • Larry M

So do Canadians. Canadians have a lot of oil too. Canadians don't blow themselves up shouting "Alla hu Ackbar". Canadians are civilized and honor religious freedom unlike Arabs who ban baby names like Benjamin just because it's a non-Muslim name. These Muslim Arabs are primates.

    Smart woman good interview!

Pakistan's little duplicitous masquerade was revealed when we caught Bin Laden. Even before that it was pretty obvious what the Pakistani government was doing given all the money and arms flow and giving sanctuary to terrorists. Heck the Pakistani ISI even flew out senior taliban commanders in the beginning of the War. That alone was enough to make me personally realize Pakistan is a traitor dog nation.

I also have no doubt the Pakistani government knows where Zawahiri is and is protecting him. Dogs typically run in packs.

If I were President I'd demand Pakistan hand over Zawahiri or start the most violent drone campaign ever witnessed in history. But meh I am just a peasant with no power to do such. So we shall just kick back and watch dog traitor Pakistan keep mocking the West, receiving our bribes, and then knifing everyone in the world in the back.

Pakistan is a dog of the USA. A dog always does what the master orders.

    April 7, 2014 at 2:53 pm |
    • Get over it, already!

Pakistani muslim dogs get down on their hands and knees and say "Allah O Akbar" 5 times a day, and then suck the dick of America, just to get military funding........ therein lies the difference...........

      April 7, 2014 at 3:17 pm |
      • Faisal

Hey why get so touchy. Fact is that Pakistan has done exactly its master's bidding always. What more can you ask from a dog. And there are very few muslims in Pakistan, so get your facts correct.

You guys don't need to get so nasty to express your opinions..

What most of the world refers to as "Pakistan" and the "Pakistani government" actually has very little control of anything that goes on in the country, sadly. It's almost a front. Majority of Pakistanis are normal simple people doing their best to get by and have a decent life.
The people that can pull strings and have influence are the utlra fundo mullahs and ISI types that are funded out of Saudi. They feed off of the poor and uneducated people that have nowhere else to turn and use fundo fear to control them.
They don't care about money or humanity... They are power hungry, mysogynist evangelists that will do anything to increase their cultish power... That is the "Pakistan" that Gall is referring to.

I dont know how anyone in their right mind can defend Pakistan in any way shape or form! HOW do they justify arresting and fingerprinting a 9 MONTH old little boy for attempted murder? Ya lead by example and children learn by what they see! Good grief! Thats just outrageous! WOW!

We live in a world where it is trial by Media – where one part of the world has the right to demonise the other half through half baked stories to further a higher powers agenda or a vindictiive journalist hungry to further her career.

    Rationalisation and restrospection.

80,000 Pakistanis have been killed for a war thatw as never their war and we talk of the ISI but if it were not for the ISI then vast majority of unfriendlies across the world would never have been captured.

US has been targeting Pakistani areas through drones as well as field soldiers to hunt Al Qaeda leaders, workers and even innocent Pakistan tribal peoples since 2002 so why not they targeted Al-Zawahri. I am wondered that Carlotta Gall know about the presence of top leadership of Al Qaeda in Pakistan and CIA do not know. Perhaps Carlotta Gall know more!!
Carlotta Gall is really upon biased statements of General Zia ud Din and other opponents of General Musharaf. She is very humbly requested to gave second look to his research.

Al Zahwari is inconsequential to a Pakistan that is 'married' or lets say joined at the hips to the arch enemy of Al Zahwari ......that is Saudia Arabia, who recently gave Pakistan amysterious gift of 1.5 billion dollars.

Pakistan supports Haqqani group?...probably true.Has done in the past and I would be surprised if there was'nt still , lets say euphemistically , 'contacts'.
But OBL and Al-Zahwari have never been part of team PAK , past or present. Why would they upset Saudia Arabia and support them now especially as they have a limited role in the Af-Pak arena.
This journalist asks Afghans , who have always hated Pakistan , for their private views , and she has gained 'intelligence ' on the rumours and written a book.
Lazy journalism for a receptive audience.
