If the Bush administration deserves a fair share of blame for “losing Iraq,” what about the Obama administration and its decision to withdraw all American forces from the country by the end of 2011?
I would have preferred to see a small American force left in Iraq to try to prevent the country's collapse. But let's remember why this force is not in Iraq. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki refused to provide the guarantees that every other country in the world that hosts U.S. forces provides.
Some commentators have blamed the Obama administration for negotiating badly or half-heartedly and perhaps this is true. But here's what a senior Iraqi politician told me in the days the American deal was being discussed. “It will not happen,” he said, “Maliki cannot allow American troops to stay on. Iran has made very clear to Maliki that its number one demand is that there be no American troops remaining in Iraq. And Maliki owes them.”
This Iraqi politician reminded me that Maliki had spent more than two decades in exile, most of it in Tehran and Damascus and his party had been funded by Iran for most of its existence…
…Washington is debating whether air strikes would work or training forces would be more effective, but its real problem is much larger and is a decade in the making. In Iraq, it is defending the indefensible.

Have you the reporter forgot one important aspect of all this mess?The ISIS whom try to overtake iraq, was actually
fueled and recruited members off the syria civil war which had started some two or three years ago.It started this civil
syrian conflict under the actual Obama administration.It had the duty to take care of the matter and since the insurgency
over syria grew stronger and more able to do harm across the border over in iraq.
Don't meddle with Syria seemed to have been the moto.To let it go don't seem to fit well with what we have on our hands.I think it is a direct cause from one conflict to the other.While i am at it the fact there was no al quaeda in Iraq before the whole iraq invasion started up don't say for sure them wouldn't have come later on in place,just to show my example fit in well,isn't what had happened in syria them actually had gotten in later on?

If the idiots in the white of 2003 didn't liar so they could have a fun war in Iraq and steal thier oil we would not be in this mess with Syria or Iraq now.
The US sets itself up as the world's police, invaded the most countries in the last decades, supported fighters and revolutions of every stripe as in Syria and Ukraine, deposed legitimate leaders yet is not responsible for any outcomes? What is the purpose of action then if there are not measurable, or is it that they only take responsibility for positive outcomes. Except for deposing Saddam Hussein, not one goal was met in Iraq.
There is no action without a reaction, anywhere. And the gathering response to actions in the Pacific, Ukraine, Middle East, North Korea and Iran is going to be inevitably felt. Our dying words will be 'but we had nothing to do with it!'
Well, we should have never invaded Iraq; once we did we had no plan going forward -none, no electricity in the city, no medical, no training. BUSH fired all the top generals in the Iraq army who angry, without an income, but WITH skills migrated to a group like ISIS bent on revenge/religiously motivated. WHAT possible outcome could we expect? How dare Bremer, Wolfowitz, Cheney even open their mouths. We were arrogant and illiterate with respect to Kurds, Shia, Sunni – and the deep hatred for each other; there never was a country of Iraq; simply a dictator who kept maniacal military control on all. No way would I ever support doing anything now. Malaki made a deal; wanted Americans out; not just out but wouldn't even sign a SOFA agreement. And now, how would we even state was our goal would be? Kill all of these terrorists, how? Use bombs, where? Give weapons? to whom. Stop Bagdad from falling? for how long? and at what price? This is a sick case of ignorance causing a war; and the needless sacrifice of our young men and women, let alone a trillion dollars spent; still and always accruing interest. Wisdom is knowing what you can do; what you must do and in some cases what you should not do. Watching the GOP a la Lindsey Graham who never served a day, sit back and criticize NOW; its sickening.
See Kath that's where your wrong..we tried to rebuild a couple Sam's to supplies electric power but it kept getting destroyed by the Taliban..and we did set up clinics. Etc..but if the people do t carry on after we leave..That's not our problem

Read Joe Stiglitz's book on the Iraq mess, to get a better picture. Also, watch: Iraq for Sale, and No end in sight, done by PBS, to understand this mess a little better..............
The US invested billions in this country and to let it fall to ISIS at this point represents a total failure of US efforts, blood and money. The Obama administration must act to save this situation, once done the political process will have to be restarted as the reason ISIS has gained so much ground is that at present Iraq is only represented by the current Iraqi administration to the exclusion of all others, thus they are disenfranchised and looking for change.
Bill, I agree with part of what you say; it IS a bitter pill to swallow realizing we should never have invaded; we wasted American lives; and money. I'm not willing to waste one more thing. WE will never get inside the minds of these religious fanatics and their internal hatred between Kurds,Shia, Sunni...ISSA is a group of about 5 thousand Sunni bent on revenge against Shia ruled Iraq.These insane zealots have always hated each other, how would we or why would we go in now? We are currently operating in Nasiriyah on children with heart disease and I can tell you that the entire country that exists outside of those held by ISIS at present are all scared to think what may happen. We are talking to parents, doctors and nurses and they are truly frightened that their country is going to be torn apart again, all sure it will make the last 11 years look like a walk in the park compared to what they think ISIS will do to the people.

agree, yet I'm amazed reading how many Americans think bush was successful in iraq; and believe that the 2011 withdrawal was obama's idea nor do they know anything about malaki's refusal to sign a SOFA agreement allowing our troops to fight on their behalf legally. i just listened to cheney it was disgusting; how dare bremer, cheney and wolfowitz even begin to voice an opinion. yet i see many republicans have already bought it AGAIN, without knowing anything about this part of the world at all.
Sending in troops is out of the question. Air raids on ISIS run the risk of killing civilians. So what do we do?
Well you are if you think its our DUTY to be the world police! Its our duty as humans to provide humanitarian aid but it is not our duty to fight their battles. This C*** has been going on for over 100 years, since the Spanish American War. The USA has constantly created pretexts for invading or "arranging" coups. Think Ike and the Dulles brothers, Iran, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Grenada, Cuba, Panama, Mexico, Vietnam, the list goes on and on.
Despite the American belief, not all people desire a democratic government. Many want a strong leader, ie, Putin. We may not want that, but many others do.
Perhaps we should stop and consider what the end result of our victories will be?
Most Americans have a family life, a social life, a work life and a religious life. In the Middle East, there is ONLY a religious life. And, obviously, Our military and political leaders cannot comprehend that fact. There loyalties lay with their family, their village, and their tribe. Those I have worked with do not have a strong sense of statehood.
Remember, those national borders were drawn in Europe, not in the Middle East.

Thank you for showing us Americans just how screwed up the entire situation is, in Iraq. America's military industrial complex is 25% of our economy. This is the KEY motivator that causes America to meddle in so many foreign countries, only making things worse! But let's take America out of the picture for a moment. Iran and Iraq hate each other due to a Shia vs Sunni thing. This has nothing to do with any western influence. You guys in the Middle East seem to lack the basic ability to figure out how to get along with "tribes" that are even slightly different than your own "tribe"......... shame on you guys for that! Very good comment. We Americans teach our kids not to bully. In fact, in my daughter's middle school, the Principal spoke from the podium and told all the students that there is a "zero tolerance" regarding bullying. If a kid is caught or reported being a bully, he/she can get severely reprimanded and sent home from school for a week! So how come America ended up being such a bully on our planet??????? Now the Mulhas will have coasts tin 2 oceans instead of one, and are too close to Europe and Israel for comfort. It appears that Bush is, at the end of the day, the champion of Islamic fundamentalism. With friends like Bush the West needs no enemies. If there is any way, humanly possible, to arrest George W Bush and Dick Cheney, and take them, in handcuffs, to the International Court of Justice, at the Hague, in the Netherlands, then please God, make it happen. They sent Slobodan Milosovic to the ICJ in the Netherlands for war crimes that were merely a tenth of what GWB and Cheney are responsible for!!!!!!!!! I hope many Americans are reading all this vitriolic angry disappointment and despair, that has been placed in the hearts and minds of millions of people, all over the world, by an American foreign policy based on bullying, and backed by the sicko war-mongering American military industrial complex. Yes, we understand that it was guns and bullets that got you sicko "white boys" to steal the entire planet from the rest of us, but that was a horrible act of murder followed by thieving. Get it???? Bombing the crap out of other countries does not work anymore, in an internet age where billions of people can network and share their thoughts. This awful behavior of one group of people dominating another goes way back to Greek & Roman times. They used swords, horses and chariots, to murder and thieve from all their neighbors, but in the end, they grew spoiled, lazy, arrogant (sound familiar?) and the 5 D's took hold: divorce, drugs, debt, decadence, deception (like America today!) .......... and then Rome fell......... and all the neighboring countries got their revenge............. is history going to repeat itself............ again?????!!!!!!!!

We Americans teach our kids not to bully, within our US public school system. In fact, in BOTH my daughter's middle school and elementary school, the Principals spoke from the podium and told all the students that there is a "zero tolerance" regarding bullying. If a kid is caught or reported being a bully, he/she can get severely reprimanded and sent home from school for a week, and if the bullying repeats, that kid can be permanently expelled from the US public school system!!!!!!! So how come America ended up being such a bully on our planet for so many decades??????? Double standard crap, when it suits us............. beyond sickening...............

Enough or key people have been bribed or corrupted to propagandize the favoriability of the authoritarian regime. Three, under duress. Or four, purely out of ignorance. Its easy for someone living in a free country to believe every country is like theirs. And maybe freedom doesn't matter to them. Well it doesn't matter until they come under the thumb of such regimes. Then it matters.
