Israeli foreign minister: I didn't agree with ceasefire

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

Fareed speaks with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman about why he disagreed with the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

You have criticized the ceasefire that was established between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Why?

First of all, the real question – how to prevent the next operation. As Protective Edge was the third operation in six years, and the question is if it’s possible to do something and to achieve a stable and sustainable ceasefire or peace agreement. The last speeches that we saw from Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza and Khaled Meshaal in Qatar, they clarified their position. They explained that they will fight Israel and their goal is to wipe out the state of Israel.

And I think that we must deliberate our position regarding Hamas from the beginning, from scratch. And I think that we have enough force to finish this story and to topple this terrorist organization, and I don’t see any differences between Hamas and ISIS and al Qaeda. We saw their executions in the Gaza Strip. It’s exactly like Islamic State’s or al Qaeda.

So if this is your view, this is a fairly major disagreement with the prime minister. This is not a small matter. This is not a domestic matter. How can you continue to stay on as foreign minister of a government where on the principal foreign policy issue that you face, you disagree with the government’s policy?

No, at the end of the day, we have a cabinet and I’m sorry to recognize that I was a minority in our cabinet. But we [are] one part of – very important part of – this coalition, and we will support our government because alternative, new elections, earlier elections – I think it’s a really bad choice for the state of Israel.

lets make this simple. did hamas sit across from Israel at the negotiations? did they at any time shake hands? neither happened, there is no agreement only a promise that hamas never made.. hamas does not recognize the right of Israel to exist, they do not support a two state solution. they did not disarm or promise not to rearm. the war resumes in one month

Shaking hands or not shaking hands, Israel did negotiate directly with Hamas. Even though Israel was hiding behind a curtain.

Israel doesn't recognise the Palestinians right to exist and have a free independent state and wants to wipe Palestine off the map. Some Israelis even claim the Palestinians never existed they have no respect for right to life. Israel is not committed to peace. Its existence is not under threat. no country has the military means to wipe out Israel unfortunately. Had that been the case they could be forced to reconsider proper fair peace negociations not the lies and false promises and pretenses they usually come up with.

Well acctualy palestine never was existing like the arabs helped the british to occupaiy this land from the turkish ottoman's and they got promised a state here samefor the jews they got promised a land there too so the UK splits it 50% 50% but the arabs disagree and then they attack the jews jews fight back and win the war untill now
Okay so Jews were promised land and so were Arabs during WW1.
Jews flocked to the Palestinian land after WW2 and set up its own economy.
Jews and Arabs argue and fight about who gets what land.
European agreement splits the land but segregates Jews in the new Palestinian land and vise versa.
Arabs reject proposal and attack Israel and loses 60% of land proposed..
Arabs fight for 50+ years trying to regain its former territory but lose every single war..
And the latest conflict began because of the murder of 3 Jewish boys and 1 Arab boy.

Yasser Arafat invented/created Palestinians in the last part of 1967/and 1968,he even goit to the UN it should be noted that this man was born in Cairo Egypt, his only real role was to keep the fight going, and he did...! !

Reghan, it is historical fact that "Palestinians" never existed until recently. Until the 1960s, most of them were called Jordanians. However, that has nothing to do with respect to human life! In fact, the only people that deny the other side's right to exist and have their own state is the fanatical side of the Palestinians like Hamas! Who unfortunately, have leadership roles for their people. Israel has offered statehood, as has the U.N., to the other side multiple times and every time was turned down. I resent your position that Israel does not want peace,a position that is easily debunk by looking at Middle East history. How many wars has Israel had with Jordan and Egypt since peace treaties were signed? Zero. Because those countries don't attack Israel. If Hamas had never been attacking from Gaza, something they have been doing for a decade, Israel would never have to respond in Gaza, there would never have been a blockade set up etc. The Paestinians can have peace any time they want it – the problem is many, not all but many, don't want it. They would rather attack Israel.

Why is that overly obese Woman on TV preaching at fit men in violation of God's word the Holy Bible, Betty Johnson. God's word forbids women from standing up in churches and speaking from the platform. (use keywords provided and find this out for yourself)
And just why is it that the average US adult woman is now visibly obese? American women used to be 99% fit and trim not too many years ago. What happened that made Americans so fat? Even the average man is fat now. Even children and family pets are copy-catting Americas nationwide obesity epidemic.
How did thus happen to US?

I take the Bible seriously, but not as literally as you do.
That was one reason for my moving from the Southern Baptist Church to the Episcopal Church, where I was confirmed in 1992.
The most useful religious advice I ever received personally was from a woman priest (Episcopalian).

Odd. I don't see Arab nations invading Africa and taking diamond, oil, and gold back to their respective nations as Africans starve. I don't see Arab oil men bribing Nigerian leaders like Halliburton has been caught doing at least 4 times.
All I see are murderous Jews and overly obese Americans being greedy.

      September 1, 2014 at 1:13 pm |
      • Philip

In fact, the last I heard of Arabs invading Africa and taking Africa's natural resources back home was when Africa's most valuable known resource was humans.
Arabs would purchase African slaves from crooked African leaders and force them to become Muslims under threat of death. This is how so many African-Americans have Islamic family trees. American Christians also purchased slaves in like fashion. Even some deep southern Baptist black men owned slaves. Many African slaves converted to Christianity in hopes of receiving less severe beatings and; fewer raypes of their daughters. And don't tell me that Christians don't have rapists among them. Every single US Catholic archdiocese has already been bankrupted from paying 100's of millions of $$$ to settle lawsuits of families with boys that were statutorily rayped by openly gay priests.

Hamas leadership is in Qatar noted, then my question to those who are saying that Isreal was attacking innocent covvolloan populace is was the over 4500 rockets fored from Qatar, did Idrael fire 4500 rockets into her own rerritory from Gaza. This and more are some of the questions that those Ignorant fellow need to answer before they can validly make any meaningful arguement

    September 1, 2014 at 6:29 am |

Get a clue. We have videos of IDF forces attacking and killing 4 Palestinian children who were playing in the sand on the beach, and much other evidence of murderous Jews targeting innocent civilians.
And we have UN mandates that require the International Criminal Court to investigate each and every death of Palestinians and drag any and all Jew war criminals to Justice.

        Israel, we're talking about.

  8. JimNasium

Meanwhile, Israel is now illegally settling another 1000 acres in the west bank, said to be their biggest land grab in 30 years. Yet, when people like this minister speak, they always represent the Palestinians as the obstacle to peace. I'm having trouble deciding whether they're just incredibly clueless or incredibly dishonest...

    September 1, 2014 at 6:44 am |
    • Joey Isotta-Fraschini©

      @ JimNasium:
Don't you know any Israelis? I know lots of them.
Believe me: one thing that Israeli's are not is "clueless." They are smart, well educated, brave, and tough as my old leather coat from Selbach's.

      September 1, 2014 at 7:39 am |
      • Joey Isotta-Fraschini©

I would never form "Israelis" as possessive in the sentence above.
My cellphone, designed to prevent our children's learning to spell, did that for me.

        September 1, 2014 at 7:44 am |
      • Joey Isotta-Fraschini©

No, I was wrong: the plural form printed properly, and I saw it incorrectly without my glasses.
Still, I contend that children's education with computers greatly harms their ability to think.

Not all Israelis are Jews. Nearly half of Israel's population are not members of the Jewish religion. And just 85% of Americans claim to be Christians, not all of them are practicing Christians. Many Jews do not follow the commands God handed down. The Jews I have known are just as ignorant of God's commands as Christians are.
Jews make good bookkeepers though, what with their long and bible storied history of being greedy and tight fisted. I had a Jewish bookkeeper one time. His crafty ways of fudging numbers made me want to kick his ass so I fired his sorry ass instead.

So THAT is whats troubling you @ Philip? That Israel allows sodomy in their troops and the US still does not? Simple fix...move to Israel and you can sodomize as you wish! You can live out your days having a flaming good time!!!

    September 1, 2014 at 8:49 am |
    • Philip

No. What's troubling me is that the International Criminal Court hasn't finished investigating each death of Palestinian citizens at the hands of IDF forces as UN mandates require.
I can hardly wait for murderous Jews to be dragged to Justice and publicly executed as WAR CRIMINALS, Exactly as was done to NAZIs who murdered and enslaved Jews, and NAZI BayerAG doctors who used Jewish women and children as lab rats to develop mind altering Rx prescription drugz that 70,000,000 Americans are currently addicted to. Drugs that make people fat and stupid like Hitler was addicted to.

      September 1, 2014 at 10:27 am |
    • Philip

Btw, only 8 NAZI Bayer AG doctors faced war crime tribunals at The Hague. 8 years prison sentence was the harshest punishment handed down, and 4 years was the longest prison sentence served.
The rest of NAZI Bayer AG doctors were smuggled into the USA and went to work for Bayer Pharmaceuticals North America.
Then secret US government operation "Paperclip" smuggled those "doctors" into the USA. In 2009, after many years of lawsuits under the Freedom of Information Act, the US government was finally forced to admit doing this. So don't just reply by saying that I'm full of shat, Chrissy.

what cnn didnt report is hamas was on the verge of accepting the cease-fire when less than 200 palestinians were killed, but qatar threatened to expel mashaal if he agreed to it so he authorized the attempted abduction of soldiers during the cease-fire.

so because of qatar, another 2,000 palestinians got to die.

    September 1, 2014 at 2:26 pm |
    • Philip as Ahkmed the Terror Guy

Yup. Exactly. Qatari leaders are puppets of the West who have turned Renegade by siding with invading infidels of holy lands. The voice of "Al Qaeda" originated in Qatar with Al Jazeera news agency having their original offices located in Qatar on a.US military base.
There is nothing new under the sun. Throughout history powerful militaristic nations have bribed leaders of foreign nations and turning them into puppets. That, or flat-out using their "national defense" forces to invade and occupy lands that have things their greedy citizens back home desire having. Things like Africa's gold and diamonds and oil. Things like control of Afghanistan and Ukraine vast pipeline systems.
Thank you for pointing out Qatar, Mark.

Right now, I'd rather go to the gym and work my abs. How many 75-year-old men do you know who can see their abs? Lots of young gentlemen in the locker room don't like me.
Workouts give me an advantageous perspective on the importance of RC priests' celibacy, blood diamonds, the functionality of all the ballpoint pens in China, and the Meaning of Israel.

Several. But not at the gym. At work over the years.
I haven't been to a gym since I was 19. I walk/run 5 miles per day and do some light push ups and sit ups. The main source of my health is daily fruits and live greens, and plenty of UV light exposure to my eyes. And very limited red meat and dairy product usage.

"...and plenty of UV light exposure to my eyes."
Do you really think staring at the sun is healthy?

      • Philip

No, LaBella. I know that the only process known to science and medicine that can possibly scrub excess fat from human cells does not begin until retinas are exposed to about 20 minutes worth of direct UV light exposure along with chlorophyll found in live green veggies being present in our digestive tracts during REM sleep... sleep that is disrupted by pharmacy products.
You ARE an extremist. That, or one who strains gnats while gulping down camels. Little ankle biter dogs too blind and short to see or reach the head of the matter.

*RC priests who are openly gay and regularly caught in the act of statutory raypes of under aged males, you mean. Not simple lack of celibacy as you say.

I agree some amount of UV rays on your skin is beneficial. You didn't say that though, did you?
"You ARE an extremist. That, or one who strains gnats while gulping down camels. Little ankle biter dogs too blind and short to see or reach the head of the matter"
No, I only disagreed with this one portion of your 9/2, 8:50 post; the rest was fine, so I asked the pertinent question on that.

Good Lord, who's the extremist? The one who asks the question, or the one who cannot give an answer without insulting ad hominems?

Please show me exactly where I said anything of the sort, Philip.
You have an irritating tendency to try and put words on other people's mouths, and then argue against what they never said in the first place. It is an intellectually dishonest way to debate; if you want to be taken seriously, knock it right the hell off.

@ LaBella, I think that @ Philip was quoting what I said, and that he was addressing me, maybe, although that's not exactly what I said.
I didn't ever meet any "openly gay" RC priests, although I've known RC priests that I was sure were gay. That was fine with me, BTW. A lot more straight men would be priests if they could be married.

Perhaps, Joey; it would be ever so helpful if he would actually state who he was talking to. It appeared his 11:31 post was a continuation of his 11:27 post to me, given the close timing of it. Further examination tells me you are probably correct. I should have known, though. His 11:31 post didn't have any ad hominems in it.

  20. Ferhat Balkan

Well, Israel announced on Sunday a land appropriation in the occupied West Bank that an anti-settlement group termed "the biggest in 30 years". "Land appropriation" meaning theft. Approximately 988 acres of land were seized by Israel for Israeli settlements. This was done on instructions from a military run civil administration. When asked why they did it, they gave no reason. This is what Israel does year in and year out. They take land that doesn't belong to them. When the Palestinians protest, they bomb them to submission. Then they take more land. This is Israel's answer to peace "Might makes right". They killed more than 2000 civilians, they can do it again, so stealing more land is their right, because they got more weapons/military might.

Jews in democratic Israel need to kill non-jew voters in order to insure that a non-jew Prime Minister is never elected. Wake up, Ferhat.

Thank you, Ferhat! You speak the truth, my friend............... problem is, truth alone does not prevail.............. money talks................. war mongers prevail............ that's why Israel gets away with MURDER & THEFT, in broad daylight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wondering why God allowed Roman troops to completely destroy the Jew Temple in 70AD along with every single Jew man, woman, and child. A mistake of God's?
