On GPS Sunday: One-on-ones with Rouhani and Peres, and how to contain Ebola

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

On GPS this Sunday: The leaders of the world gathered this week in New York for the U.N. General Assembly meeting, and GPS gathered some of the most interesting voices to get their takes on current events.

First, Fareed speaks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani about the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the state of the nuclear talks, and the harsh judgment handed down against six Iranians who made a "happy" video.

“Iran, from the very first moment, did not hesitate in fighting against terrorism,” Rouhani says. “Other countries apparently had their doubts for quite some time.  They were under the impression that, be it as it may, they acted quite late in the game.”

Next, Fareed sits down with a man who decades has worked at the highest levels of Israel’s government. Shimon Peres discusses the prospects for peace in the Middle East...and why at age 91 he's considering a new career – including delivering pizza.

Also, the Ebola outbreak – 1.4 million infections are possible says the CDC...and that's by January, in just two nations. What could be done to contain the crisis? Fareed puts that question to Chelsea Clinton, Paul Farmer, and Liberia's foreign minister.

Lord Shiva is god of destruction in Hinduism. He is a head chopper in chief of India. He even beheaded/chopped his son Ganesha's head. He is the fabric of Hindu culture. Hindoos are the penultimate jeehadis.

  8. unemployed pakistanis abound

wow, look the large number of troll comments on here, from what must be uneducated, unemployed, Pakistanis, with lots of free time on their hands! we are talking about Iran here guys, and how the entire world is sick and fed up of white domination, especially considering the fact that the white people have slipped terribly over the last 30 years. Their ship of dominance is sinking, most of them have no clue, and all they can do is: bomb, bomb, bomb........ while Asia smiles...........

    September 27, 2014 at 9:25 pm |
    • but what about Fox News?

But if you watch Fox News, you will be amazed to learn, that the white people are truly superior. They are awesome, they are fantastic, in fact, they are soooooooooooooooo superior, that they DESERVE to rule the world, and bomb the crap out of any nation that they feel like bombing, and nobody, not even the UN, can do anything about it. Ahem......... does anybody think that, maybe, perhaps, possibly, just maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe, FoX News is.......... Ahem........ kinda lying?

The regime of iran is liar. Nobody trust them in iran.
They broke their promises many times. No human rights for Iranian and no access to the facebook or websites or twitter. All have been filtered!.

They jail thousands of oppositions that mostly are students, teachers, lawyers or other religions and Kurds and Arabs and executed thousands of political prisons over the last 30 years. Most of them wanted democracy and human rights.

They wanted bomb to control the region and continue dictatorship in Iran.
Do not trust their promises. They didn't allow to Mr Shahid the united nation human right inspector to visit the prisons!
How they permit to have their Nuclear sites visited like Fordoo?!!

    • muslims, wake up

good comment from an Iranian, who knows the truth about inside Iran. my dear fellow, what you don't realize is that the western world has been pulling your chain for a long time now. All the Muslim nations are basically screwed, until they learn to play a more complex and clever game with the white dogs. Look to Asia, to learn how to play the game to win. Asia has been winning for over 10 years now. The understood the greed of the white pig, and used it to win. Rest of the world can learn, and learn fast. just remember, with every bomb they drop, they are sinking deeper into debt. when the time is right, Asia will just blow, and the white house of cards will come tumbling to the ground. it is just a matter of time. billions of people are getting to know this truth.

Thank you, Mary Jane. I feel the same way about this filthy Tea Party lingo and the people here who use it, including my impostor. 13. US Taxpayer, you are being robbed, again!

We Americans have to admit to some sad facts here, no matter what our race and no matter the race of our president. Tens of millions of our jobs have gone to Asia. This problem has grown worse over the last 10 years, no matter which party has the majority or who is president. The the issue of bombing Muslims has not been resolved, in fact, after 911, it has grown much worse, and after we destroyed Iraq, it got even worse. It seems like we are swimming against the current, and no matter how hard we row, the current is against us. What should worry us all is: the situation is getting worse, and no solution seems to be working. The amounts of money being charged, to the tax payers, for all these bombs and military hardware is certainly not getting any cheaper. I was appalled to hear what just ONE cruise missile costs and what the F22 costs! certainly not a sustainable financial equation. And with more and more jobs going off to Asia, we are being significantly weakened, financially. Just to attack ISIS, our most recent foray into war, I understand the numbers being thrown around DC are estimated at US $ 500 billion. Not funny at all.

    September 28, 2014 at 1:05 am |
    • Mary Jane

Thank you. Very good points indeed. And no real solutions. Only rhetoric and rubbish on Fox News. How lost we Americans have become. How did we stray into this blind alley? And we are certainly making no friends with all this bombing, and only increasing our enemies substantially.

Visiting India, E. M. Forster witnessed the eight-day celebration of Lord Krishna’s birthday. This first encounter with devotional ecstasy left the Bloomsbury aesthete baffled. “There is no dignity, no taste, no form,” he complained in a letter home. Mostly Hijras and Khusras rubbing Krishna's linga and chanting bhajans. Recoiling from Hindu India, Forster was relieved to enter the relatively rational world of Islam. Describing the muezzin’s call at the Taj Mahal, he wrote, “The beauty, grace, and sublimity left me dazzled with a muslim culture so refined and civilized".

E.M. Forster, the British Army captain who discovered the erotic temples of Khajuraho in India in the early 19th century was outraged by how “extremely indecent and offensive” depictions of fornicating couples and pundits raping cows and assortment of other animals profaned a “place of worship.” Lord Macaulay thundered against the worship, still widespread in India today, of the Shiva lingam. Even Karl Marx inveighed against how man, “the sovereign of nature,” had degraded himself in India by worshipping Hanuman, the monkey god.

OMB has published expense report that includes $1 million spent on White House fumigation after Modi gang left White House. Expense to clean the BO left behind on furniture and in the air. Hindus defecating in the corridors and spitting paan in Oval Office. Drinking water out of toilets. In one instance a person from Bangalore was caught masturbating in west wing. Spots on furniture fabric due to indians wiping their hands off after eating curry.

Secret Service had to physically kick the Indian gang out after they wore gas masks. Nobody wanted to come close to these hindus due s hit smell. In fact President Obama refused to sit next to Modi and had the janitor dressed up in dhoti to do so.

A new mammal discovered in the remote desert of western Africa resembles a mouse in appearance but is more closely related genetically to elephants, a California scientist who helped identify the tiny creature said on Thursday.

The new species of elephant shrew, given the scientific name Ganeshascelides Shivacus, inhabits an ancient volcanic formation in Namibia and sports red fur that helps it blend in with the color of its rocky surroundings, said John Dumbacher, one of a team of biologists behind the discovery

  27. when the mullahs take charge

Iran is a classic case study, for all the people of planet earth, of why it is not necessarily a good thing, when the religious cadres of this world, take over the government of a State. Ever since 1978, after the Shah of Iran was deposed, and Ayahtollah Khomeini took charge of Iran, the world has watched, and waited, for the most amazing advancement and re-emergence of the Persian civilization to unfold. It never happened. Why? Simple truth: because these religious types are just religious types. That's why. They have no understanding of the modern world, the complexities of modern economics, the need for a society to embrace technology, the need for a modern society to embrace some basic freedoms. They are stuck in the eleventh century, with Sharia Law, and wave a book, their Koran, that emerged from some events in the 6th century. They are truly the past. No wonder they cannot forge towards a bright future for their populace. Rouhani is just the mouthpiece of the archaic mullahs hiding behind him. He has learned to equivocate, to say no when he means yes, to say maybe when he wants to dodge a direct question, to dance to the tune of his bosses (the mullahs) without heaping too much hatred of the people upon his head. Basically, he is dancing between the raindrops, and not getting wet. The entire world can easily see through his facade. Iran will remain a joke until they get rid of their mullahs from the 6th century. The scary part for Iranians: that may never happen....

    September 28, 2014 at 3:38 pm |
  28. separation of Church and State

The Western World figured out a concept called: "Separation of Church and State" long ago, and for exactly the reasons you have enumerated. Thank you! Time for the Islamic World to take note, and do something about it. Whether it be the mullahs of Iran, or the single-minded, Koran focused, Taliban of Afghanistan, or the lost goats in the desert called ISIS, that also wave their Koran at the clouds, all proclaiming Allah O Akbar, while they murder infidels, all these buggers need to take a breather, think about things for a few weeks/months, re-evaluate their approach to life, consider whether 6th century thinking is progress, and learn from Asia to make science, technology, hard work and non-violence, their new mantra. Until they can evolve into that new heaven of freedom, they will remain at odds with the rest of us, and continue to have bombs raining down upon them. The problem: they have no clue! How sad is that???

    September 28, 2014 at 3:40 pm |
  29. Donald Schellberg

I watched Mr. Zakaria's interview with President Rouhani and in spite of the president's professed reasonableness, there are many issues in Iran that lead one to take all his comments with a grain of salt. In this case, the canary in the mine is the Baha'i community of Iran. Baha'is do not engage in violent struggle, they don't get involved in politics, and they are obedient to the laws of the country where they reside. The fact that is that the Iranian Baha's have been persecuted for 40 years, they have been imprisoned, executed, their property seized, their holy places destroyed, even the cementaries have been destroyed. Although, President Rouhani claims to be a moderate and Iran has tentatively agreed to improve its human rights record, persecution of Baha'is has actually increased during the president's term in office. My question is this. If the President of Iran can't even fulfill a promise to stop persecuting people solely on their religious belief, how can we trust him and his government to implement any nuclear accord?

I think they're using those people in that apartment (in Dallas) as lab dummies. They still have the sheets with Ebola bodily fluid on them. The kids, girlfriend, and nephew are stuck in that hazardous place. I think the Gov't doing some kind of study on the low. Because it's no reason why they haven't got that stuff out of that apt. I know one thing the Gov't needs to handle this Ebola situation more aggressively
