Peres: You cannot be global and racist

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

Fareed speaks with former Israel Prime Minister Shimon Peres about the growth of terrorist groups in the Middle East.

Do you believe that as a result of this, relations with this common enemy of terrorism, relations between Israel and the Arab countries and Middle Eastern countries are inevitably going to get better?

Undoubtedly, in my eyes.  You know, we live in a global world. I don't, I'm not sure that globality had it in mind or planned it. The fact is, the globality put an end to racism. You cannot be global and racist. Finished. You cannot be global and even nationalistic. Finished. Globality doesn't hang on power, but on goodwill.

I question Shimon Peres' sincerity when he says "I think we have to give to them the state". He had plenty of opportunity to do so when he held power. Instead he turned a blind eye to the illegal Israeli settlements... Shimon Peres may be a Nobel Peace prize winner, but just like Netenyahu, he is a war criminal. He is responsible for the Qana Massacre in 1996 and he was also behind Israel's nuclear weapons program. He was in office when Israel killed more than 1,000 in Lebanon and 500 in Palestine using illegal weapons such as white phosphorus.
In Israel, racism and extremism are getting worse. Not only against Arabs, but also against Ethiopian Jews. We saw many examples of this when the 3 Israeli boys were kidnapped this year when Israeli racists rampaged through the streets shouting slogans like "Death to Arabs!" or holding up banners that said "Hating Arabs is not racism, it's values." In May of 2012, racism against Africans boiled over when calls for "blacks out" were shouted by Israelis in Tel Aviv and death threats, bombings and destruction of property took place.

If we look at history, the Jews have always had an extremely selfish streak. During Shakespearean times, they were ruthless moneylenders, demanding their "pound of flesh" even if it meant the murder of human beings, as we learned from "The Merchant of Venice". After 1900 AD, the Jews displayed awesome achievements in business and knowledge based progress, with one fatal flaw, they always got ahead of others using extremely selfish behavior and a total disregard of non-Jews, profiting immensely from the impoverishment of their non-Jew neighbors. After WWI, the Germans were languishing from the poverty of sanctions imposed upon them. The Jews figured out a way to live "high on the hog", in Germany, while the Germans were going thru an awful depression. No wonder, when Hitler created his Nazi party, he targeted the Jews as the lambs that must go to the slaughter house! Their greedy, selfish behavior, spoke volumes! Yes, the Nazis were wrong to try to exterminate the Jews in Europe. But the Jews sure gave them some pretty darn good reasons to come up with the plan! Extremely selfish behavior is never rewarded.

So then, after 6 million Jews get slaughtered by Hitler, they go "crying" to the UN, in 1948, to create their own homeland, in what is now Israel. But guess what? They did not change that extremely selfish streak that lurks within their genome. So, the first thing they do, in 1950, is to screw over the natives that just happen to be living on that very same land: The Palestinians. The newly formed Knesset, quickly passes laws that say all the land within Israel now belongs to Jews! This causes 710,000 Palestinians to run for their lives, and get herded into the "reservations" of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. And we all know what has transpired since 1950. It has been one attack after another on the oppressed original inhabitants, murdering them, thieving from them, bombing them, hiring them as indentured laborers, blockading their access to the ocean, blockading their access to any land borders. Does one see the incredible selfish streak coming through again? These have to be the most selfish human beings on Planet Earth!

@Ferhat: "I question Shimon Peres' sincerity when he says "I think we have to give to them the state". He had plenty of opportunity to do so when he held power."

Israel OFFERED the Palestinian Arabs peace and a sovereign independent state in 1948, 1967, 1978, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009... and the Palestinians REJECTED it every single time.

No, Farhat, you're mistaken here. Israel can OFFER the Palestinians peace and a state but it can not SHOVE it into the Palestinian collective throat against their will.

How about this approach? The Palestinians need to decide whether you Jews should have the right to even one square inch of that land. They were living there very happily, until you Jews showed up, in 1948, and stole all their homeland, by 1950! It is the Palestinians who should decide how much land you Jews should have and that concept should then be shoved down your unwilling throats! Freakin' ignorant, extremely selfish Jew, has absolutely no clue about what a terrible travesty has occurred in Palestine and how 710,000 Palestinians were chased into refugee camps by greedy selfish Jews, while the world did absolutely nothing!

"How about this approach? The Palestinians need to decide whether you Jews should have the right to even one square inch of that land."

Interesting approach... To help you figuring the answer using your own intelligence I'll turn it around. So...

How about this approach? The Jews need to decide whether you Arabs should have the right to even one square inch of that land.

If you don't like this idea then your original one is flawed.

While it appears that. @ Ferhat Balkan's questioning of Perez's sincerity will be proven to be completely valid and even prophetic concerning Perez and every other citizen of Israel, sometimes human beings change dramatically.
It would be wonderful if both Israelis and all Arabs in that region decided to live near each other in peace and distributed the land equitably.
The possibility of change should not be denied. As long as there is life, there is hope.

Indeed Joey, I wish the same thing. I hope that one day the Jews and Arabs will understand each other and live in peace. People have an inherent potential to change, to see the world through an unbiased and unprejudiced way. Unfortunately, it'll take a long time before that happens. I'm talking about the generalized view. The problem is global. We talk about globalization, but there's also global generalization, or prejudice against a certain group of people. In this case, it's Islam. We see it everywhere. Even here on CNN. You see CNN anchors making generalizations, promoting anti-Islam views when they really should be spreading the message of peace. If you don't believe me, take a look at this debate with Reza Aslan and CNN anchors and how prof. Aslan answers all their bigoted questioning with the truth. The truth that Islam is not to blame here, yet the media, press and politicians all around the world do so freely every day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pjxPR36qFU
Perhaps Shimon Peres has changed over time... I wouldn't put it past him. But he said it himself "one has to be judged through his actions, not by what he says".

      September 30, 2014 at 6:53 pm |
      • Joey Isotta-Fraschini©

Ferhat, Islamophobia need not be as rabid as that of David Horowitz to be noticed and understood by many in the USA.
Although my culture is Christian, I often find myself explaining basic elements of Islam to others, because it is not familiar here.
Almost anyone would benefit from remembering to base his actions on respect for others, and on submission to the will of God.
I agree with you that understanding will probably come slowly. Those who already understand Islam somewhat can speed the process.

  3. Wesley Sandel

How incredibly "large" of Peres to suggest that Israel give the native Palestinian people a little piece of Palestine that the zionists don't want.

It's very much like thinking that the Nazis would have been OK if they hadn't gassed millions of Jews but simply kept them in the concentration camps for decades while subjecting them to systematic, violent racist oppression.

Zionism is racism – there are no "degrees of racism" so that there are some zionists who aren't quite as bad as other zionists. Racism is wrong and evil in every manifestation.

    September 30, 2014 at 9:02 am |
    • Thinker23

      @Wesley Sandel: "Zionism is racism".

REALLY, Wesley? WHAT is your definition of racism? and HOW COME you call the ONLY state in the Middle East where ALL citizens have the very same equal rights regardless of their race, religion, ethnic group or gender – a "racist" state?

      October 3, 2014 at 2:40 pm |
    • good comment

Thanks Wesley. good comment. Shimon Peres, the sweet little pizza delivery boy, that murdered 1000's of Palestinians when he was in the Israeli Defense Force, now gets to make "oh so magnanimous" comments, about how he is going to give a few square inches to those poor beggar Palestinians. Should we give him a big tip, for delivering some awesome pizza? Or should we kick him soundly on his Zionist racist behind, and send him back to his Kibbutz?

    • holy land

There is a good reason that the "not so holy" holey land is called the holey land (intentionally misspelled). It is because it is full of holes. bullet holes and bomb holes. shame on all of them. really.

  5. Sitting Bull

What the Israelis have done to the Palestinians, is really not much different from what the Anglos did to the Native Americans. Basically, a bunch of humans show up on a piece of land that other humans are living happily upon. Then the new group decides that it is perfectly ok to slaughter, massacre, oppress, murder, thieve from, and shove the other group onto reservations. The land gets occupied by the new group of humans, while the original group of humans whimpers in pain and suffers tremendously from the loss of life, loss of resources and loss of land, that they used to once enjoy. The only difference between the 2 horrible, tragic, events: 300 years.

"you stink jew. we can smell you from a 1000 miles away...."

No, you can not. The Arabs forced almost all Jews our of the Arab countries so there are no Jews left there for you to smell. Besides, the Arabs are too busy living their happy peaceful lives in Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Libya and other Arab countries they don't have time left to smell the absent Jews,

@ sitting b s...i would think people had evolved over those many decades ago! You cannot change the past but you damn sure can change the future!

    September 30, 2014 at 1:10 pm |
    • evolved or devolved?

Nice thought chrissy. But let's look at reality. The absolutely horrible and illegal manner in which the US entered Iraq, in March 2003, and the subsequent complete and utter destruction of Iraq, by US war criminals, do you think that was an evolution or a devolution of modern, so-called civilized human beings? Forget about past vs future. I wish we could change the present! The US has been behaving like an out of control 800 lb gorilla, for quite a few decades now yes?

I have to agree that the Jews are "an extremely selfish streak". When they were mass murdered and forced out of the countries where they've lived for centuries they've actually left... and by LEAVING they've caused those (now Jew-free) countries to go through a low of misery and suffering.

The innocent leaders and people of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen and other Arab states forced the Jews out and look how they live today... Nine years ago the Jews left Gaza and look how the Gazans live today... 90% of Jews left Iran and look what is going on there... Wars, sanctions, terrorism... and this is only the beginning of the problems the Jews brought on their enemies by LEAVING them alone.

What is is with these Jews?
