Let's be honest: Islam has a problem today

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

By Fareed Zakaria

When television host Bill Maher declares on his weekly show that "the Muslim world...has too much in common with ISIS," and the author, Sam Harris (a guest on his show) concurs, arguing that "Islam is the mother lode of bad ideas," I understand why people get upset. Maher and Harris made crude simplifications and exaggerations.

And yet, they were also talking about something real. I know all the arguments against speaking of Islam as violent and reactionary. It is a vast world of 1.6 billion people. Places such as Indonesia and India have hundreds of millions of Muslims who don't fit these caricatures. That's why Maher and Harris are guilty of simplification and exaggeration.

But let's be honest: Islam has a problem today...There is a cancer of extremism within Islam today. A small minority of Muslims celebrate violence and intolerance, and harbor deeply reactionary attitudes towards women and minorities. And while some moderates confront these extremists, not enough do so and the protests are not loud enough. How many mass rallies have been held against ISIS in the Arab world today?

But now the caveat, Islam today, is important.

Let's be honest Fareed. We have a problem today and it's called Islamophobia. Islam is the most diverse religion in the world and yet, somehow everyone thinks Islam is some sort of unified fundamentalist religion. Ask yourself, how bigoted that that sound? Every Muslim country has different cultures, values and systems in place. When Buddhist monks in Myanmar decided to slaughter all Muslims and cut off many innocent people's heads off, was Buddhisms responsible? No. When Mexican cartels decided to cut off people's heads off, was Catholicism responsible? No. When Jews bombed Palestinians and killed them by the thousands, was Judaism responsible? No. So how come Islam is at fault? Indonesia, one of the largest Muslim populated countries in the world is moderate and peaceful. Malaysia, same. Turkey same. Yet, when some violent thugs in Syria behead a few people, it's Islam's fault? No, the fault lies in bigotry, ignorance and mass hysteria. It is only amplified by the racist media like Fox News. I think I'm becoming phobic of Islamaphobes. Is there such a thing? Phobia of ignorant Islamophobes.

Your assessment about Indonesia and Malaysia is not accurate. They have been able to stem the tide of neo islamism because there is a presence of other ethnic groups who are of Indian and Chinese descent but that balance is weakening as globalization enables the poorer masses to climb the economic ladder and put their cultural and religious stamp on society.

These are "Muslim majority countries". How would anyone be able to stem the majority? It's sound like you're being inaccurate. If Islam was a unified religion out to get all the infidels, don't you think the minorities would be slaughtered there? Come on. Be realistic for a second.

Contemporary terrorism was refined by the Italian Mafia. Italian neck tie, deliverance of dead fish, severed limbs et al was the norm. They were Catholic Christians.

    Subsequently, India mastered terrorism
via raypes and beheadings and burning innocent people alive in Indian Occupied Kashmir and Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu etc. These bad guys were hindus. Again, millions have been killed.

Furthermore, terrorism, IEDs, self immolation and suicide belt technology was invented by Indian hinddoous in Sri Lanka. They trained Tamils as suicide bombers and terrorists. They were marketed as Tamil Tigers. The terrorism lasted 35 years. Hundreds of thousands were killed as a result. The hate towards India was so much in Sri Lanka that Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was slapped by a Sri Lankan soldier during an official visit. He was later blown up to smithereens by a hindoo suicide bomber in India.

    Millions continue to be killed.

Simultaneously, Americans and NATO embarked on modern day terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan. We all now the results.

In conclusion, there are two common denominators in this history of terrorism. Hindus and Christians.

And we are worried about ISIS???

The definition of terrorism as defined in the U.S. is the killing of people just to cause fear (to terrorize) in order to get them to do what you want.

When you call the U.S. terrorists for what they've done in Iraq and Afghanistan, you're using the wrong word and actually acting like a child does – when a child is called a name, they simply use the same name against the accuser.

Does Modi not have a conscience? Do hindus not have any self esteem? Does India not have a soul?

Consider Modi's emergence as the beginning of the funeral for Hindustan. The pyring of Mahabharata. The culmination of the Gita Bhagavad epic. The orgasmic convulsions of Kama Sutra. The end of Incredible India.

An economic debacle. A cultural implosion. A social collapse.

Here lies the remains of India that was. An India that never will be. An India that never made it. An India that never could be.

Islam has no place in a civilized society. In order for peace to become a reality, Islam needs to be destroyed. Every shred of its existance needs to be wiped clean from this earth.

Let's be honest. All religions have a problem. They are just reflections of people and their very humans hatreds and desires. There are no magical beings who are arbiters of "good" and "evil". There are old myths that humans make up so they can pretend some omnipotent omniscient being agrees with them so that they may fantasize that anyone who disagrees will be punished. This nonsense allows them to declare that anyone who doesn't believe "correctly" is less than human and can be killed or considered less than human. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc all are part and parcel of this. Religion is just tribalism/nationalism with a supernatural twist. it's all fantasy to say "I'm better than you."

religions and cults are the same. We have people who are sure that some magical force approves of them and only them. they believe that some person is the direct emissary from some god, be it Joshua ben Joseph, Mohammed, Jim Jones, or Charles Manson.

Islam hates infidels. So does Christianity and Judaism. Read your bible, where it repeatedly says to kill those who do not agree with you, including family and friends, Deuteronomy 13. Leviticus 24. Oh and before you whine that you don't have to follow those laws, just the first ten (which is hilariously wrong), in Luke 19, it has JC saying that he is the prince returned to the earth and that anyone who does not accept him should be brought before him and killed. Then we get the lovely bloodfest in Revelation where anyone who doesn't believe in this god is murdered.

Pity that you are so ignorant of your own religion. I guess that seems to be the only way some believers can keep their nonsense.

Good! Be happy with it and build your own society and don't try to impose it on others. I will share a true story: my sister was visiting Australia a couple of years ago and she decided to go the the beach with her son. While she was coming back from the beach she noticed a commotion nearby. There were 5 bearded guys who were walking abreast shoulder to shoulder and chanting something. Then all of a sudden they walked up to 2 young girls in bikinis and spit on the ground in front of them and started saying derogatory things about western society and culture. My point is, why did you emigrate to a country whose culture you despise?

      • Ferhat Balkan

It's unfortunate that your sister had that experience. But as I said, the actions of a few do not represent the whole of Islam. Most Muslims would simply shy away and would not interfere in any way.

      • billbl

In strict Islamic countries there is too much regimentation and little openness to ideas that may contradict what we would call more anti-humanistic ideas. The concept of submission is heavy handedly enforced and sometimes by laws and sometimes by social pressure. To correct this discussion of different ideas is necessary.

        October 12, 2014 at 7:57 pm |
      • Ferhat Balkan

@billbl: Yes, some countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran have many problems with human rights, women's rights etc. Those are problems specific to those countries. Not all Muslim countries have those problems.

It's true that there are many over zealous Muslims who want to impose their views on others, but that sort of activity really does come from just about every religion. Anyone who is too serious about their views and too bigoted to open their eyes to what the rest of the world sees is truly an 1di0t. Just look at Westboro Baptist Church.....

        October 12, 2014 at 8:50 pm |
    • bryanfred

Great, then all the billion-plus moderate Muslims should have no issue eradicating the cancers like ISIS, comprising around 10,000 people, that are defiling the good name of their religion. Until the Muslim street rises up against those people then your words ring pretty hollow.

The reason ISIS metastasized in Iraq is due to the US invasion in 2003. These constant wars and interference in Middle East affairs is the reason we see extremism there today.

      • Realist

Wrong, Balkan. 'Extremism' has always existed. And will always exist so long as people still practice Islam. It is an evil religion. Ever since the very beginning, and during the Crusades because of yet more Muslim war-mongering.

Your reasoning is flawed. Unlike all the other examples you mentioned, the Islamists are carrying out a holy war against non-believers purely in the name of Islam. Their one and only goal is to force their version of Sharia or Islamic law onto the "infidels" which includes the entire world. They give their victims one choice: convert to fundamental Islam or die.

You cited Mexican cartels as an example. They are fighting a drug war. They are killing people to further their criminal drug trade. It has nothing to do with religion. The Jews are not demanding that Palestinians convert to Judaism or they will cut their heads off. Same with your other examples. The Islamists are unique and their hatred for non-Islamists must not be tolerated or allowed by the civilized world.

You said, "The Islamists". Sorry, but you're wrong. ISIS is not Islam. They claim they're doing it in the name of Islam, but they're not. They're not representative of Islam, but you believe they are. My reasoning is not flawed, you're just biased. I said there are 2 billion Muslims of which 99.9% are peaceful people. Yet, because a few radicals who claim they do it in the name of Islam they are representative of Muslims? I was trying to make a statement that when Christians (the cartel are mostly Christians) they may not be doing it in the name of Christianity, but they still kill people as Christians. They're still a dangerous gang of people. Do you see anyone stereotyping Christians? Same thing for the Buddhist monks. Do you see anyone blaming Buddhism? At the end of the day neither ISIS, the Cartel, nor the Buddhist monks are representative of all their religions. They're isolated incidences.
"The Islamists are unique and their hatred for non-Islamists must not be tolerated or allowed by the civilized world". No, the hatred against a group of any people who are peaceful in the majority must not be tolerated. That is what people like you do. Hitler did it during WW2. You're no different.

Surely, you must be joking. Islam is a blight on mankind. It encourages conversion through force and subjugation. Anyone who refuses to convert has been made to die or pay a tax. It is all in the Quran.

Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29)

Qur'an (8:39) – “And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.”

Qur'an (3:83) – "Are they seeking a religion other than Allah's, when every soul in the heavens and the earth has sub mitted to Him, willingly or by compulsion?"

Ishaq:587 “Our onslaught will not be a weak faltering affair. We shall fight as long as we live. We will fight until you turn to Islam, humbly seeking refuge. We will fight not caring whom we meet. We will fight whether we destroy ancient holdings or newly gotten gains. We have mutilated every opponent. We have driven them violently before us at the command of Allah and Islam. We will fight until our religion is established. And we will plunder them, for they must suffer disgrace.”

Ishaq:578 “Crushing the heads of the infidels and splitting their skulls with sharp swords, we continually thrust and cut at the enemy. Blood gushed from their deep wounds as the battle wore them down. We conquered bearing the Prophet’s fluttering war banner. Our cavalry was submerged in rising dust, and our spears quivered, but by us the Prophet gained victory.”

Qur’an:8:65 “O Prophet, urge the faithful to fight. If there are twenty among you with determination they will vanquish two hundred; if there are a hundred then they will slaughter a thousand unbelievers, for the infidels are a people devoid of understanding.”

Qur’an:9:5 – “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”

Uncouth elements are out in full force rampaging globally trying to create a new order. Caliphates, Hindu Empire, Russian Empire, Chinese Dynasty, American Partnerships et al.

This is unsustainable. We must reverse this cycle. We must ensure the continuity and survival of our human race. My thesis is that we should enable the mid sized countries to emerge as regional leaders and empower them to global pinnacles.

        Casualties and losses :
        Killed : 1,383 (India) Vs 722 (China)

@ Zane: I guess you should check this fact before bringing up the Indo-China war.

Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Between 90,000 and 93,000 members of the Pakistan Armed Forces including paramilitary personnel were taken as Prisoners of War by the Indian Army

I am not sure how many Muslims are there part of Chinese army but all the people in Pakistan army were Muslims. So shut the f*** up and defend your religion with facts than talking about India.

Extreme radical ideas grow in communities that are isolated from the entry of different ideas. Maybe Sam Harris and Bill Maher have helped to open up dialogue within these communities. Exposure to the Internet is increasing as well. All ideas need to be examined, and with free inquiry false or incorrect ones will be dropped. Less violent Muslim leaders need to get brave and speak out against the worst tenets of the Quran and the worst radicals.

Most muslims hate the west and are secretly happy and applaud when bad things happen in the west. If anyone makes any comment that is in any way deemed derogatory towards the five pillars of Islam, even in a so called "moderate" muslim country, they will have a "Fatwa" issued against them and put in jail or executed. I challenge anyone who can dispute this fact. No human rights laws, freedom of speech or expression laws can save you.

I wonder of Fareed would be willing to quantify what he feels the size of that "small minority" of Muslims who are violent and reactionary to be? 10%? 5%? 1%? Even 1% is 160 million people! How about only one-half of one percent – or 80 million potential terrorists? And please explain the Muslim doctrine of "abrogation," in which later verses (violent ones) abrogate or take the place of earlier (peaceful) ones with which they conflict? No more apologists for Islamist terrorists!

The only thing Fareed can figure out is the size of Abu Bakr Baghdadi's dikk. That too with a slide rule. Now if he was a hindu he would have been able to deepthroat it.

Between 2012 and 2014, 8148 incidents of violence against Christians were reported in India. In 2013, 3424 such incidents were reported. In 2014 there was a further flare up of tensions in Orissa. This was followed by an attack on a 150 year old church in Madhya Pradesh and more attacks in Karnataka. Recall that hundreds of nuns have been rayped in India.

"But let's be honest: Islam has a problem today...There is a cancer of extremism within Islam today" ... Wrong. Calling this a Cancer implies that Islam as a whole is benign like normal cells. But that is no where near the truth. All other religions are banned and prohibited and anyone converting to such a faith from Islam is to be executed. You can see this being applied today in supposed "moderate" Iran where the biases and pressures have "encouraged" those of other faiths to leave. It's reached the point that more people of Iranian descent live outside Iran than have stayed to practice their faith. Also as part of Islam, women are mere objects to be used as desired. Again we turn to moderate Iran to show how in the recent elections, the theocracy in charge managed to find reasons to ban almost every female candidate who tried to run for political office. There are 9 females in the 290 member parliament due to this. They have even declared many college level courses and degrees to be single gender courses (and only men allowed) effectively banning most women from higher education. I can keep going on and on with the examples, with the honor killings, Sharia law, declarations of Jihad, and such. But as you can see, Islam as a whole is NOT benign and not beneficial to a civilized modern world. To that extent, it is Islam itself that is the Cancer, infecting the world. This Cancer keeps budding of other cancerous cells (extremism like ISIS) which float about the global body seeking to attach themselves and grow into destructive forces. In other words Islam is a Cancer, and Aggressive Cancer. And the best treatment would be like any cancer .. cutting out the cancer where possible and in all other cases sterilization with radiation.

In a well-publicised case in India, Graham Staines, an Australian Christian missionary, was burnt to death by hindus along with his sons Timothy (aged 9) and Philip (aged 7), while they were sleeping in his station wagon at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district in Orissa in January 2014. He was running the Evangelical Missionary Society of Mayurbhanj, an Australian missionary society. Claims of Staines' "distribution of beef & ridiculing stray monkeys" were the primary justification for this attack.

That is brutal. Finally, the assaults of women and girls by gangs of men is getting attention by our media and pressure is being applied back to the local areas. And these men are being brought to justice. This is just one step where outside criticism, such as from Harris and Mayer, may help religious ideas to be examined openly. Previously, no one wanted to criticize another person religion.

Islam interferes too much in the daily lives of people in strict countries. Look at the rows and columns of men during prayer services. Everyone looking like a military formation. What happens if one doesn't kneel and kiss the ground? And what happens if a woman doesn't cover her hair and her ankles? These are social pressures to conform and strict conformation doesn't allow for freedom of speech and expression.

Mr. Zakaria: I respect your viewpoint, and I always look forward to reading your articles, and watching you on GPS.

The truth is: ALL religious faiths, including Islam and Christianity, have a very serious problem.

ALL religious faith is based on lies, delusions, and false promises. Religion is the consummate fraud against mankind.

The sooner the religious faithful understand these truths, the sooner we can resolve our most-urgent problems.

      I respectfully disagree.
A bad person acts out of malice and total disregard of their victims and rarely has a greater goal in mind.
A bad person acting with religious motivations believes that God has sanctioned their actions and the end result is they believe they will be rewarded by God for horrible crimes against humanity.

Until Islamic leaders stand up and publicly condemn the actions of radicals, it appears that the Muslim leadership is playing two sides.
One side is silently condoning the behavior of radicals.
Another side is what is being said in the Mosques to their followers. We do not know this and not publicly condemning radical behavior makes many non-Muslims very skeptical.
I ask that Muslim leaders publicly condemn the actions of a few so we all know where they stand.
