Asia key to Obama's foreign policy legacy

Watch "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN

By Fareed Zakaria

Obama's biggest foreign policy initiative is powerful and intelligent – the pivot to Asia.

The greatest threat to global peace and prosperity over the next decades comes not from a band of assassins in Syria but from the rise of China and the manner in which that will reshape the geopolitics of Asia and the world. If Washington can provide balance and reassurance in Asia, it will help ensure that the continent does not become the flash point for a new Cold War.

But the Asia pivot remains more rhetoric than reality. Having promised a larger U.S. military presence in the Philippines, Singapore and Australia, there is little evidence of any of this on the ground...

...I know the world looks messy and the administration is now on the defensive. But recall what the world looked like when Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger were conducting foreign policy.

America was losing a war in Asia in which it had deployed half a million troops. The Soviet Union was on the march. Domestic opposition and troubles were mounting. Nixon and Kissinger had to initiate a major retreat but, as Robert Zoellick has pointed out, they combined this with a series of bold, positive, assertive moves.

China’s generals believe in hitting as fast and as hard as possible, a style of warfare they demonstrated in their 1987 blitzkrieg against India. The aim is to wage “battles with swift outcome” (su jue zhan). This laser focus has been a hallmark of the war with India in 1962 and 1987 during which they annihilated Indian Army and destroyed it and captured 10% of India up north in Aksai Chin region.

On October 20, 1962 at 5:14 am, Chinese Army overwhelmed the attacking Indian forces in Arunachal Pradesh. Simultaneously, the Chinese cut the Indian communication lines, preventing the Indians from making contact with their headquarters. At about 6:30 am, the Chinese infantry launched an attack from the rear and forced the Indians to leave their trenches and killed or captured most of them.

The Pentagon has boots on the ground in some 130 countries around the world. What more do you want? Total and absolute domination?

Now I remember a famous Rupert besides Murdoch. Rupert the Pert Shampoo guy. He sort of looked like if Grizzly Adams had a gay son. Prolly had hairy shoulders too. I don't think it was very popular for men to shave their bodies back then. Many women didn't shave either. Unibrows weren't as common back then. Warts were the big problem.

They key is what it's always been. Africa. Where all the goodies are. Gold, oil, diamonds, various other precious minerals that make things like cell phones possible. And, of course, the key includes the M.E. where China drinks her oil and sucks her natural gas from. In order to make more stuff for you and keep you fat and happy. Not dissatisfied and speaking out.

Simultaneously, on October 21, 1962 at 4:30 am the Chinese troops, in a blitzkrieg, overwhelmed the Indians in a series of flanking manoeuvres south of the McMahon Line and prompted their withdal from Namka Chu. Fearful of continued losses, Indian troops escaped into Bhutan and Tibet. Chinese forces pursued and captured thousands of Indian soldiers. Chinese forces now held all of the territory that was under dispute at the time of the Thag La confrontation, but they continued to advance into the rest of NEFA.

Big deal. After WWII was over, US and Brit air forces continued to bomb Dresden and Berlin civic centers. Children were being sucked off the ground by raging infernos towering hundreds of feet into the air. British citizens took to the streets in public outrage against these war crime bombings. Americans yawned. And still do.

On 22 October 1987, at 12:15 am, Indian Army surrendered to Chinese Liberation Army. About 125,000 Indian soldiers were captured. This was a victory that propelled China into global leadership and a defeat for India that sealed its fate as a curmedgeon in world politics...

Like that plasticrap badge Americans wear. The one emblazoned "World Police" who are actually paid enforcers of the American Way of Life (sodomy, abortions, Druggery, etc) Oh. And consumerism.

Who in the hell wears a badge saying "World Police"? I have never even seen one of these badges...where are you hanging out at?
