The real crisis facing the USA are the ongoing nationwide obesity and AIDS epidemics. The average US man is now officially obese. And the avg. US woman is visibly overly obese. Obesity and AIDS are taxing our healthcare system. Not health insurance corporations as the official story says. Health insurance companies only turn a 4% gross profit margin. Not enough to make a big difference. Meanwhile, AIDS and obesity combine to account for well over half of all American health care expenses.
The real crisis is in medicated crazy people that have guns....................stay far away from small children..........

Yes. Most states allow drug addicts to legally purchase guns and all of America's mass murderers for over the past 20 years have been men or boys addicted to mind altering prescription drugs.
In Colorado now, if you have a history of mental health issues and used mind altering Rx drugs to deal with them, you aren't allowed to legally purchase a gun ever again. And legislation is pending that would allow law enforcement to take guns away from all who use mind altering Rx drugs.
Got pills? No guns for you then.
If you have a history of mental health issues, period. Whether treated or not, people who cannot discern between reality and imagination should not be allowed to legally own firearms.

Some of the most famous performers in my industry has been hospitalized for depression. I would not deny them a gun.
The second most famous piano concerto in the literature, the second Rachmaninoff, is dedicated to the composer's hypnotist, who treated Rachmaninoff for depression.
Most USA citizens who know the second Rachmaninoff piano concerto, at all, think that it is a pop song, "Full Moon and Empty Arms."
Now, there's a reason for classical pianists to become depressed.

I don't consider depression to be mentally ill, per se; for the most part it is a temporary condition, depending on the type of depression Dx.
However, your friends are precisely the people Philip wants to deny gun ownership to. Because he thinks anyone that takes an SSRI, under a doctor's supervision, taken as directed, is wrong; he considers them to be less than US citizens with all due rights afforded to them.

On the Regulation of Gun Ownership
I am less concerned about guns owned by mentally ill persons than I am about the unrestricted ownership of guns by robbers and drug dealers who ignore all laws on principle.
Should all citizens be armed? I have been taking an informal poll to find out what people think.
So, I'm asking you, JIF.
Many residents of my city are not mentally ill: they are just so angry at members of other races that they cannot think rationally about the necessity of firing guns.
Cities with populations in the millions always experience exponentially more crime. Thankfully, violent crime has been on the decline for years now; the methods of how we find out about them has changed, so we get that information faster than ever.
This makes it seem like there's more crime, when it's actually the opposite. People with video capabilities on their phones make information sharing lightning quick.
There's good and bad aspects of this.

Hmmm. Seems like the argument here is the role of men over women. Seems like a little scripture may lend a new perspective.
God created the woman as a "helper" for the man:
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (NIV, Genesis 2:18)
However, being a "helper" does not imply that the woman was inferior or subservient to the man; the same Hebrew word, `ezer, translated as "helper," is used to describe God, Himself, in Psalms 33:20, 70:5, 115:9-11. In fact, God created both men and women in His own image and made them equal custodians of all His creation:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. So it seems the God, in his wisdom, put man AND woman on equal footing in the custodial sense. It must me true since God created BOTH in HIS image.
